different uses of cctv have different effectiveness.

speed cameras are the worst, a while ago they installed these really vicious-looking blue ones that probably distracted more drivers than got them to slow down.

in-store cctv in supermarkets is apparently useless- tesco is a rip off anyway so we help ourselves to a few extra chocolate bars now and then and nobody notices, despite there being dome-mounted cctv cameras on every aisle.

when it comes to crime, particularly street crime its not particularly useful. most fights/attacks are over once the police have been alerted. but i guess they're useful in the long term for reconstructing events and stuff.

either way they're not really a nuisance. in some places they've started installing cameras with speakers, so "the man" can shout at people on the street for littering or whatever. one of the finer features of the totalitarian state.

i don't imagine them being very effective, most degenerate british kids roam in packs and will probably just laugh or vandalise the camera. until they're equipped with tasers at least

They're not actually all real cameras, they just have enough to cover the store

i know you think i'm crazy, but i do believe that. 1984 was the required reading for enough americans that the implementation of something like a city-wide closed circuit tv network would be instantly be perceived as big brother tightening his grip.

also when i said "americans" i meant americans in today's socio political climate. i'm certain this kind of system would be more passively tolerated once numerous other, more subtle measures were taken to tighten the stranglehold on our rights.

Talking

You do know these don't just exist in London, right?

This is excellent though

Quote:
Householders who keep putting out their bins on the wrong day could be caught out by secret spy cameras hidden in tin cans and bricks and branded "envirocriminals".

Ealing Council in west London is using the hidden cameras to catch people committing "major envirocrimes" such as graffiti and fly-tipping on main roads.

However council tax payers who put out their bins on the wrong day could also be caught up in the push.

The cameras, which cost around £200 each, are triggered by built-in movement sensors.

The council, which is Conservative controlled, said in a newsletter to local residents: "To catch vandals and envirocriminals, cameras disguised as anything from tin cans to house bricks will instantly email images to the council's CCTV control centre."
