Question using japanese electronics in USA...question?

i'm buying a japanese minidisc deck. this site is offering me a "voltage converting transformer" for $30 as an accessory..

i'm no electronics whiz, but i thought that japan followed the usa standards for power pretty closely?

does anyone know for sure though? i don't want to fry a $300 minidisc recorder because i made a stupid mistake.

im almost positive they are the same. may be a gimmick on the adaptor.
in hong kong(following british electricity) i simply bought a 5 dollar power
bar coverter and all was fixed.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I was thinking about buying a GBA SP from Japan and they all stated it as the same. Maybe they are trying to rip you off with the overpriced "accesories". As all those converter things can be found in travel stores for supa cheap

Well a portable device which runs on batteries isn't really a good example now is it?

It runs on a built-in lithium ion battery that gets charged by plugging the unit into the wall.

I don't understand how that isn't a good example then? It's a japanese device that you plug into the wall.. and it works in the USA.

if you buy it w/o the adaptor and it turns out you do need one it's not like you won't be able to find one around. i'd go without it.
