i was doing some reading.. seems there's many suspected causes, from trauma to the area, genetic predisposition, or behavioral occurrences, such as sitting funny which would cuase pores to stretch. once stretched, 'junk' such as dead skin, lint, etc. can accumulate and clog the pore. the oil naturally secreted by pores is then blocked, and the abcess develops. the uniqueness of the area (not much exposure to air, near a strong source of bacteria, as well as some other stuff i didn't understand, can cause it to spread up into the fatty tissue more more than would occur in other bodily locations. basically an abcess gone very, very wrong, to lift a phrase from http://www.pilonidal.org/

i have cellulitis on my right foot. i can barely move my toes or walk, and if it gets in my bloodstream i could die.

that sounds horrible. the only thing i've had that bears any relation was an egg-sized abscess at the top inner part of my thigh, near the groin. it hurt like fuck and i was basically walking like a 90 year old for about a week, but fortunately it was treated relatively quickly and it responded well to antibiotics. not really in the same ball park though, admittedly. those pictures were truly horrendous.
