Rangers win the nightcap 9-7 which makes 39 runs off 40 hits in a doubleheader. That's gotta be some kind of record or something that hasn't been done since Teddy Rooselvelt was President.

Right but if he came in with 2.2 innings left in a one-run game and bases loaded and held the opposing team scoreless, he'd have a save as well.

I thought the most archaic and idiotic rule in baseball (other than the infield fly) allowed a save in this situation as well regardless of how many runs the pitchers' team scored.

basically when a popup in the infield is ruled an out automatically to prevent fielders dropping it in order to get a double play

Just because it's hardly ever called - it's a "rule" that's not enforced.

what's the problem with that?

i do agree that the 3 inning thing is ridiculous regardless of the lead, but if you do come in in a 1-run game in say the 8th with the bases loaded (and get out of it) and in the 9th your team scores 10, you still did 'save' the game by getting the crucial outs when the game was in danger in the 8th.. and finished the game for your team.

i hear of the infield fly rule being called all the time. there's no reason to call it if there are no runners on base. i couldn't tell you how many times i've been watching a game on tv or listening on the radio and the announcers mention that on a pop up the infield fly rule has been called for that particular play..

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with that. I wasn't very clear earlier.

If the guy pitches the 8th and then a new reliever comes in during the 9th with a much larger lead there is no save for the guy in the 8th. Right?

This would all be clarified if 'hold' was a recognizable category by MLB.
