Thumbs up Star Wars - Ep. II - IMAX

*huge-no-wonder-I-don't-score-geek post contained herein*

I saw this about a week ago. Regardless of the relative goodness or badness of said Episode II (bad dialogue, piss poor acting, ass-raping of Ep. IV-VI and all the rest), the film looks amazing projected onto an IMAX screen. All of the details that were put into the FX really show off on something of that scope. To make the film fit to an IMAX format, they had to cut out about 20 minutes of movie. It makes the plotline boderline incomprehensible in an already overly-ploted film, but they also cut out alot of the "love story" scenes. (I guess seeing Christensen and Portman fake chemisty 80 feet tall didn't work out as well as they hoped so they chopped it)

Still, the sound is amazing in an already cool sounding flick. Those charges that Jango Fett sets off in the asteroid chase above Genosis kick the teeth and out of you and then in again. The film contains so much more camera movement than a regular IMAX film that its borderline headache inducing -- but I mean that in a good way. IMAX can have a tendency to become labourous because when films are shot in that format every single shot has a tendency to linger over everything. By transfering a film which was shot originally for a standard format, the IMAX image absorbs you in how fast its going by you. (The opening scene chase in Courscant makes you dizzy)

When the film blown up to that size, the quality of the picture is amazing and the details in the FX really pop out at you and it gives all the CGI a much-needed sense of weight and depth that you don't get watching the film projected standard or even on the "perfect clone" digital DVD transfer.

I was surprised that to see it, its actually cheaper than going to see a first-run film. Which was a bonus, considering how crazy expensive a full-price first-run ticket can cost you.

In the end, its basically ILM CGI pornography. But its really cool high quality 80 feet tall ILM CGI pornography.

Thumbs up

Yeah, I need to make a point to see this while I can. The nearest IMAX theatre is over an hour away though.

Thumbs up

I'd see it. I've seen EP. II twice, and the second time it seemed a lot less lame, so maybe if it is shown in IMAX it'll be even less lame.

true, but it looks and sounds great. You know the saying "You can't polish a turd" well for this one you can.
