If Donaghy starts naming names involved in activities against the rules of the referees David Stern could decide to "clean house" and get rid of all the current officials. Regardless of the outcome, I don't think this situation will do much more damage to an already damaged league. As much as some people, like sppunk, blame the downfall of the league on it becoming "a thug league," I don't think that's a main reason, especially when players from the NFL and MLB have had PR problems of their own. Today's NBA players might be faster and stronger than ever before, but it's becoming more evident that they're weaker in terms of fundamental skills (defense, ball handling, passing, and especially jump shooting) and this in turn has diminished the quality of play in the league. Because of this, the NBA enacts ridiculous rule changes that piss me off (illegal defense, defensive 3 second violations), not to mention that over the years the league has instructed the refs to call more fouls, something the officials have complained about for years.

And oh by the way, the Eastern Conference is still a JV League compared to the West, even after the Celtics' acquisition of Garnett & Allen. Remember that those players came from bad Western Conference teams, while all the good teams in the West didn't lose anyone. Actually, I'd maybe pick the Celtics to win the East if I knew who else was on the team besides the Big 3, I mean they had to trade away like 7 players (including future draft picks) to get Garnett & Allen, their bench has got to suck.

good points Chuck but Stern's got go to. He's meeting his creation. Getting rid of all the ref's is like firing an entire team instead of the coach.

David Beckham just had the L.A. Galaxy pull 60,000 in New York. If the NBA doesn't get through this well, which they may not if Stern's still in charge, the MLS has their best chance yet to make some inroads in the U.S. for real.

Much as I love the Warriors, looking at any NBA game right now wondering who could be on the take transcends all the other issues the game has had over the years and threatens to sink it below hockey and soccer.

but.

the refs cheated. i may not like hockey as much as the NBA, but gretzkys wife and buddy (if thats what you meant) being involved in gambling is NOTHING like the refs being involved, the ones who control the games in a sense.

on that note i dont see MLS taking over...XFL had record audiences the first week too.

it would take a few more Premiership caliber players as well as the U.S. doing extremely well in a World Cup to give Soccer genuine momentum.

If Beckham can get the kids who do play soccer in the U.S. (which they do more than any other here) to come out and tune in and buy jerseys, MLS could gain some respectibility, not just some visibility from him.

anyway...if any of those other refs from the same Philadelphia high school as the bookie are named in this in regards to them betting on games they officiated, it's a meltdown scenario for the NBA.

in the midst of all this, we forget, the NFL now needs another "most overrated player" since Vick isn't going to be around anymore..thank god.
