Default Anyone know about ring resizing?

I got a ring that was my Grandma's that I've been wanting since she passed away 7 years ago - she said I would one day get it and today I got it! Anyhow, it's 14K gold and it has 3 stones in it, it fits my thumb but I want to get it resized to fit my ring finger probably.

How does that work? How much does it cost?

any jewellery repair shop should be able to do it. i know they have a special machine for making rings bigger, but imagine they have the reverse, like a press or something that would work the opposite way.

i think it would probably be less expensive if you go to a small local shop, because they would do it on site. but you can also try a big store like Sears or something where they'd have a jewellery department. they would probably have to send the ring out though, and that might take longer, be more expensive.

Cool, I think I'll try to look for a small shop somewhere first cuz I have no idea what it will cost. I'm just worried they'll fuck it up or something, but I guess they do alterations all the time...

I thought they melted the ring a bit to shrink it. stacee, you could pull the boyfriend highschool class ring trick and wrap some thread/string around the bottom of it and wear it like that until you can get it resized

Yeah I know you can get those little plastic things too. I might just do that because I'm sure it's going to be more than I can afford anyway.

if it's a nice (expensive/sentimental) ring I'd save up cash so you can get it done by someone you really trust. or hint to mark that it would make a nice present!!

Yeah, it's just a ring with my birthstone, my brother's and my sister's - but it's extremely sentimental. I don't really trust anyone cuz I've never dealt with jewelry my whole life - but maybe I can find out who my aunt uses, she's got tons of crazy expensive jewelry.

if you were meant to wear the one ring, it would resize itself to fit you

lol

When Chris and I got married we both had to get our rings resized... It's really a lot cheaper than you'd think (or than we thought, anyway) and if you need to get it smaller they just cut a piece of the ring out and heat it up to re-attach the new ends. I don't think I've ever posted my ring on here before, but it's woven gold and the people we went to did such an amazing job making my ring smaller that I can't even tell where the new seam is.

After being resized

We were lucky in that I had to get mine smaller and Chris had to get his bigger, so the gold they took out of mine they put into his.

I don't think it cost us anymore than like 30 dollars per ring.

Woah only $30?! That's pretty awesome, I hope I can find something that cheap cuz I'll do it next week if I can...did you go to the place you got your rings from or did you just go to a little shop or something? There's a jewler downstairs and I'm tempted to ask them but I'd feel a little out of place going in there, it's all diamonds and shit But maybe now I'll check it out and see what they have to say.

BTW that's a very pretty ring! I also received my Grandma's wedding ring today but I think that's something that should stay in a box somewhere...if I lost that or it got stolen I'd really have to kill myself.

Oh yeah and I went downstairs to ask the people at the jewlery store there what they had to say about it. The guy said one size is about $35 - he said white gold is more but this isn't. So It's not that expensive at all, I figured Kimmy got a crazy deal but I guess it's average.

Thanks, Stace! We actually aren't real big on jewelry and felt kind of apathetic about going out to buy rings, so we just went to the local pawn shop and picked out rings we liked for each other, then went to a real jeweler to have them resized.

Glad you got it all sorted out. Post pics of the ring if you can!
