From wikipedia:

Quote:
Physiologically, it is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations.
From this site: http://www.dreamsnightmares.com/sleepparalysis.html

Quote:
Sleep paralysis is a condition in which someone, most often lying in a supine (face up) position, about to drop off to sleep, or just upon awaking from sleep realizes that s/he is unable to move, or speak, or cry out. This may last a few seconds or several moments, occasionally longer. People frequently report feeling a 'presence' that is often described as malevolent, threatening, or evil. An intense sense of dread and terror is very common. The presence is likely to be vaguely felt or sensed just out of sight but thought to be watching or monitoring, often with intense interest, sometimes standing by, or sitting on the bed. On some occasions, the presence may attack, strangling and exerting crushing pressure on the chest.

...

The demon of the night has also been called 'The Old Hag' a description and myth coming out of several cultures. The Old Hag was described in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The Old Hag attack is most closely associated with extreme pressure on the chest while sleeping on your back. People may also feel like they are being choked or even bitten.

Yeah that dark presence thing is universal. That's really an odd phenomenom...that we'd all hallucinate the same thing. When I was smaller it would always be my mother because she has actually woke me up from one of those episodes before so sometimes I'd be in sleep paralysis and I'd hear the door to my bedroom unlock and it appears my mom is coming in to wake me up but she just stands over me in my bed and I'm trying to yell at her 'wake me up'. of course nothing comes out at she leans over like she's going to kill me and thats usually when i'm able to break free and when i come to, no one's in the room. I'v ehad this forever so it doesn't freak me out. Like you said its easy when you inform yourself that it isn't real. The worst though is when those dark figures start touching you and use their voicse, thats when i get pretty freaked out

I had a similar reoccuring thing like that with my cat.

The worst time I had, it went on forever, I kept falling asleep and waking up probably 5 minutes later - each time I woke up I couldn't open my eyes at all which freaked me out but then I'd hear Mark's key go in the door, the door creak open and him come in and I'd yell for him, then fall asleep. Wake up, hear the door open...etc. It happened at least 5 times in a row and every single time I really honest felt "now he's finally walking in the door". He wasn't. Then he finally walked in and I was whining - he woke me up and I just jumped up crying my eyes out. I sometimes wonder why he doesn't think I'm a weirdo
