In Montreal there are a few downtown and in the trendy student areas or predominantly English speaking areas, but not in the French neighbourhoods. Regardless, there are so many other chains battling for supremacy, no one is taking over. Tim Hortons, Second Cup, Presse Café, Al Van Houtte, Java U... and those are the immediate ones around my work that I can think of. I'm sure there are tons of other chains battling it out. There are still quite a few independent places around here that still offer free wifi and a very different vibe, and they are doing fine.

haha you live near montana tech? I know and work with some people that went there! I hear varying reports of how cool it is there.

I live in Houston and we have a lot of Starbucks and a lot of cool independent coffee houses. I think there's only one Starbucks within a 15 walk of my apartment, but there are at least 8 independent coffee shops. Then again, I think I live in the most "independent" area of the city. That said, I only live about a 25 minute walk away from the location where there are two Starbucks directly across the street from each other. Crazy shit.

my section of long beach has been really good about keeping businesses local. i can only think of a couple starbucks, and they are all either within the business-park downtown area or way out on the outskirts of town.

in terms of good independent cafes within walking distance of my home, there is:

portfolios
hot java
viento y augua
the library
