At this point, though, it's really more of a mark of honor to lose the Best Picture Oscar. Honestly, do you really think any of the pictures that have won in the past ten years really were the best pictures put out in that year? Chicago, A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, American Beauty, Shakespeare in Love, Titanic, The English Patient, Braveheart, Forrest Gump. I think I'd keep the English Patient and ditch the rest.

But that's me.

Beautiful editing in the English Patient. I read Ondaatje's book about Walter Murch (whom I christened the AVID I work on after), and it just completely renewed my love for the movie.

1993: Schindler's List. i can live with that one. The Piano is great though.

1994: Pulp Fiction > Shawshank Redemption > Forrest Gump

1995: 12 Monkeys > The Usual Suspects > Braveheart

1996: i haven't seen The English Patient, so i can't talk shit, but i loved Fargo

1997: LA Confidential > Boogie Nights > Good Will Hunting > everything else > Titanic

1998: American History X > Saving Private Ryan > A Simple Plan > Shakespeare in Love

1999: American Beauty. Being John Malkovich is runner-up.

2000: Crouching Tiger > Traffic > lots of shit that didnt suck > Gladiator

2001: Mulholland Drive > Moulin Rouge > A Beautiful Mind

2002: City of God > The Pianist > Talk to Her > Adaptation > etc. > Chicago

and that's not even counting movies that didn't get nominated in the 5 major categories so i couldn't compare them from this website.

Okay, now I gotta do this. My quick picks:

1993: Schindler's List isn't a bad pick. But I'll pick Blue over that any day. For that matter, either Kieslowski's Blue or Jarman's Blue (they both came out that year), though I really lurve Kieslowski more than Jarman.
1994: Pulp Fiction...overrated. He pulled all the same shit in Reservoir Dogs, just with more hyperbole and "hipness" (which I detest). Plus, Tarantino himself would tell you that Chungking Express owns '94. But I would disagree. But I can't decide. My shortlist: White, Red, Hoop Dreams, The Kingdom, Natural Born Killers, To Live, and Shawshank. Take your pick.
1995: I liked all your picks for this year, but didn't like them THAT much. Dead Man, Safe, or Welcome to the Dollhouse.
1996: The English Patient. Fargo's nice, but far from my favorite Coen film. Waiting for Guffman, maybe?
1997: LA Confidential, Boogie Nights, Funny Games, Happy Together, In the Company of Men, Insomnia, Lost Highway, Sweet Hereafter, Taste of Cherry, U-Turn. Damn! A great year.
1998: A Simple Plan ain't a bad pick. Elizabeth and Thin Red Line were the one nominees to deserve this one, though. Other good candidates: Big Lebowski, Happiness, Velvet Goldmine
1999: Being John Malkovich, All About My Mother, Eyes Wide Shut, Ghost Dog, Ratcatcher, Time Regained, Three Kings
2000: Traffik owns Traffic any day. My favorite by far, though, was Amores Perros
2001: Mulholland Drive, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Spirited Away (the latter two are technically 2001 films)
2002: City of God, The Pianist, Talk to Her. Adaptation was just crap.

Yeah, anyhow, don't take this personally or anything. I just wanted to get my own picks in there, but sometimes I can get kinda dogmatic.

City of God wasn't eligible for the Academy Awards, just so you know. But I guess that isn't the point you were making.

I do really want to see this.

yeah i don't. i haven't seen half the movies you have.

but i HATED The Thin Red Line. it's so heavy-handed and pushy. HERE ARE SOME SHOTS OF BATTLE. HERE ARE SOME SHOTS OF NATURE AND SHIT. LOTS OF THEM. HERE ARE SOME GUYS TRYING TO SURVIVE. GET IT?!

i never understood why so many people lauded it.

You have to understand that Malick films are not really plot or character driven. They're just very beautiful, naturalistic, and spiritual pieces. He's only made three films in 30 years - Badlands, Days of Heaven, and The Thin Red Line.

I think that all three are essential picks because they are very much not in the vein of heavy-handed pandering. If you want to see heavy-handed, just keep on watching Saving Private Ryan. It gets worse each time, I promise you. I should dig up William Goldman's essay on SPR, because it'll make you totally detest it for being so damn heavy-handed.

By comparison, absolutely nothing in The Thin Red Line really needed to happen except because it happened. And the scene where "The Unanswered Question" by Charles Ives starts to play always gives me the chills. My only beef with the film is that there are too damn many stars in it, especially for crappy three second cameos that distract more than focus the story. As compared to Badlands or Days of Heaven, the former of which brought us Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek and the latter of which brought us Richard Gere.

So, yeah. I guess that's about all.

i don't think Saving Private Ryan is that fantastic, just good. a lot of it is really good, but then there's some really annoying elements to it that drag it down.
