Question Wedding gift ideas

I'm going home this week to visit my parents and friends, and to go to a friend's wedding. The friend getting married is one of the couple of people I still speak to from high school. She and I really only talk though when I happen to be at my parents' for something or she happens to be visiting whatever city I'm currently living in. I haven't seen her in almost two years and I have never met the guy she is marrying. So what is an appropriate gift to get her?

I have no idea if they registered anywhere. And I'm not sure how much is the proper amount to spend.

Get them practicle things to start a home. Bed linens... pots/pans ... kitchen appliances. Money to go towards the honeymoon.... things like that. If you don't know, then you might want to get a gift certificate to somewhere like linens and things / target / jc penny / dillards etc. somewhere like that, so they can pick out what they want/need.

A gift certificate is a good idea.

Other things to note: They already live together. I was invited to her bridal shower, but couldn't go and didn't send her a gift.

If they're moving into another place you might be good to go with kitchen appliances etc. since people always seem to feel the need to buy new silverware and stuff in a new house. If they're not though I don't know what to tell you. You can't go in with anyone else and buy them a nice, more expensive gift or anything can you? I'd go for a blender or breadmaker or something but like you said they're living together so they probably already have it all...I really don't know....sorry

last wedding i went to, which was a family friend of my boyfriend's family.....i had met them like 2 or 3 times before and that's it....so i got one of my photos blown up ( 11 x 14) and framed and that was my present...i guess it works well for me cos i'm a photographer and i gave them one of my originals..hehe
it was a really nice black and white close up of an old fucked up piano left in the sun and rain.

so you could do something similar to that
i could even sell you a print of mine for super cheap if you want.

Find a nice frame -- if you shop around you can find very nice ones for as little as $5. Then take their wedding invitation and use either the front or the inside with the wording on it and insert it into the frame.

A friend of mine received a basket with wine, glasses and a corkscrew -- not to be opened until the couple's first anniversary. It was the topic of many conversations throughout the year, and they had great fun toasting on their anniversary.

Baskets of inexpensive gifts make a big impression. I have given everything from a sewing kit to a laundry basket full of laundry supplies to a nice basket of body oils and loofah sponges for a lingerie theme (if you're wearing skimpy lingerie you better have nice smooth skin!). You can buy many of these items on sale or at a dollar store, but the packaging and thought make it special.

A decorated photo box gives the couple a great gift that can hold snapshots from the wedding. I went to my favorite paper store and found a kit to make a drop-spine box -- which sort of looks like a book that's big enough to hold about 150 4x5 photos. The kit with instructions cost $6, the special paper glue was $7 (a pint of acid-free paper glue that I can use for several more projects), the handmade paper to decorate it was $2 and the ribbon to close it was about $2.50. It took about two hours total, drying time kekekekekekeked, and came out very pretty!
I like the whole 'to be used on the 1st anniversary' thing and the the gift basket thing sounds like a good way to give a variety of things cheaply.

My friend who is getting married is a photographer. So I was actually kinda leaning towards getting her an assortment of inexpensive but nice photo frames. But that seems like an obvious idea and she probably already has tons of frames.

hmm yeah frames are a really easy way out.
i just think black and white photos make such great decorations for empty walls
or just get them like a kamasutra kit or something
a box of condoms
some lube

yeah, that would make a great great great wedding gift

as somoene who is getting married..

-gift certificates
-household items (with gift reciepts, incase they get more than one, of course) (household items anything from a hamper to a juicer to a plunger (okay, maybe not a plunger))

really, don't go for anything like a "present present" think useful. i don't think there's an "appropriate" price. seriously. whatever you can and want to afford.
