Default people with mac laptops: here is an awesome program for you

http://www.istumbler.net/

it lets you see all the available wireless networks around you, if they require a password or not, exactly how strong the signals are, and who else is on the network. in addition to wifi, it also works with bluetooth and bonjour. and its FREE.

Ooh. I had gotten this in a software package with other stuff, but hadn't looked into it (and I'm using a desktop computer anyway). That's pretty cool, though.

Actually, speaking of Wifi... have you tried to use Wifi on LINUX? Even if some obscure program support your card, it's very difficult to make it work.

Mac OS X does this too. You just pull down the radio wave icon on the top of the screen. I guess it just doesn't tell you which ones are password protected until you click on them.
