Wilco - Either Way

I went out and bough Sky Blue Sky, and I think it's pretty good.

For a band that I was starting to think were close to being one of the greatest things ever, Sky Blue Sky sure was a bit of a mediocre let-down. I do like how his voice gets kinda Bob Dylan-ish on the album, though. There are a few good songs, but overall it just blends in together too much. Kind of boring when you think about how amazing and innovative A Ghost Is Born was.

np: John Prine - Aw Heck

Wilco are not one of the greatest things ever. Alot of potential, but largely uninspiring

well, you have to take sky blue sky as it is. it's just an easy going poppy prog rock record. i would've loved getting something along the lines of summer teeth, but i love this new album. (of course aside from shake it off, what a mistake) it also grew on me a bit the more i listened to it. you can't fault them for going on what they do best which is making melodic accessible music. i like that they get experimental here and there but at the end of the day the beautiful melodies are my favorite thing about wilco, and this album brought it to the roots of that. sometimes i feel in the experimenting they get carried away and it takes away from certain tracks. really, to appreciate the band all you'd really need would be tweedy and a couple of guitars. tweedy's voice is amongst the best in the business, they're quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. i caught onto wilco just recently, im so glad i did.

i haven't read any interviews or reviews for the album, but i would be willing to bet dollars to donuts that they recorded it on a reel to reel 8-track, mostly live. it sounds like tweedy came to the band with the songs, they practiced them twice and then recorded them.

and that's okay for, oh, bob dylan, but not jeff tweedy.
