i am trying to get my lap top working and i need to somehow find windows 98 on floppy disk. or convert it from my cd version to floppy disk. or something. anyone know how i would go about doing that?

Why do you want to use a laptop with no cd-rom drive? If you're going to use an external cd-rom drive, you could always boot from a floppy (windows startup disk) and then it will load drivers for a cd-rom drive. Otherwise i dunno what you can do.

i just recieved the external cd rom drive in the mail today. but in order to install it i need windows 98 to be installed already. that's why i'm trying to figure out how to get it from the disc to a floppy. does that make more sense now? but i guess i will try to make a new start up disc. but it keeps giving me errors every time i put a floppy in. argh. just nevermind!

go to any computer store and buy a cheap laplink cable.....then use a program like filemaven to transfer the cab files off of your desktop computer.

Go the the cdrom drive manufacturers web site and see if they offer dos drivers for the cdrom. If they do boot into dos and load the drivers. then from there you should be able to use the drive to install 98

Well, you could give this a try...

Make a startup disk (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Startup Disk) and then do a Find on OAKCDROM.SYS. (If you can't find it, go to Run>msconfig and look in the config.sys tab, there should be a line similar to this in there)
DEVICEHIGH=C:\????\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD0001
And there'll be something in place of OAKCDROM.SYS, in which case find that. Copy this file over to your floppy disk. (If you got a floppy with the drive, see if there's a .sys file on there instead)

Now go to your floppy disk, open the CONFIG.SYS file in notepad, and add this line:
DEVICEHIGH=A:\????.SYS /D:MSCD0001 (with the ???s replaced with the filename)
then create a new file called AUTOEXEC.BAT, and add this line
MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001 /L:D

When you boot up with the disk, you should have your CDROM on drive D. But it may be different for externals, so I'm only guessing with this one. You may have to go into your BIOS ('delete' when you first switch on, and the memory is checking) and autodetect the drive... but again, I'm not sure. I've never had to deal with an external before :/

It's external, fuckheads. And external likely means USB. Booting, or getting something to recognize a USB device in dos in pretty fucking difficult.

She isn't going to be able to get it to work.
