well, i don't speak french which apparently is an absolute necessity. most of my quebecois exposure comes through the phone at work. 90% of the time their first question is "does anyone there speak french?" and the second question is "why?".

i mean, i dont mean to judge an entire nation of people, but it seems the "when in rome..." addage applies more in quebec than say, the rest of canada.

i know what you mean.
the conservative wave is really hitting hard at the moment. didn't know they were expecting florida to have service in french. must be all the people retiring there.

yeah lots of people view english as a threat. pseudo-redneck mentality. but if you visit here you'll find that most of the people you meet are pleased to dig out their rusty english knowledge to try and help you. not sure how it is outside of the suburbs.

a lot of people in montreal speak english exclusively.

how does that work? a good portion only speak english and a good portion only speak french? is everything in french and english including documents?

i believe all the road signs are at the very least bilingual.

only montreal has a significant population of anglophones, and most know basic french unless they're immigrants. i would say that all anglophones in québec city and the eastern townships can speak french, although some don't like to.

road signs are mostly pictograms, otherwise they're in french.
they replaced the Stop signs with "Arrêt" in the 80's. some say both.

the law requires french to predominate.
all governmental documents are available in both languages as they are both official in canada.
