Default so, the UK declared victory and they are exiting

...over the next few weeks.

we got rid of mr. evil saddam, he's dead and not coming back, and there have been elections - that reeks of victory to me.

they aren't going to make it possible for their soldiers to die in the midst of suicide bombers and a complicated civil war which they know they could never determine the outcome of. must be some churchillian sense or something.

Actually they've been there for a while dying with americans and they're just now pulling out because Blair is on the hotseat in the cash for honours thing and this was politically shrewd for him since he's not gonna have to be the one to deal with Bush for the next couple years.

wrt Iraq, two outcomes:

1. Balkanisation into (at least) three separate states, either independant or clients of neighbouring regional power (Iran, Syria).

2. Rise of new Saddam-stlye dictator, ethnic grouping irrelevant (but probably Shia).

The length of the police-action (which it now is) by Coalition forces will likely not affect the outcome, in the long run.

sounds like the brits are circling the wagons. blair has taken a lot of shit lately so it was a smart move by him in order to survive. with the US surge of troops, it was a timely matter, and i'm sure he had told mr. bush before of his intentions.

Iraq being broken up into the three seperate states would be ideal, but it would go to hell in a few years if it was set up. the entire mid-east area is a warzone. too many influences and guns in the wrong hands down there. religiously brainwashed citizens in these countries arent helping either.

No. 1 has been attempted and failed. No. 2 is a surefire as Bush not being re-elected president in 2008.

Sounds to me like Britain's plan is what the U.S.'s plan was - get rid of Saddam, get a new government set up and get the heck out.

No need to sit around and "carekeep" a civil war that we have no business being involved in whatsoever. When asked, military commanders can't even tell you who the enemy is. Note to self: You aren't going to "win" a war when you can't even name your enemy.

I agree with you in general, but when was balkanisation attempted in Iraq? Are you referring to the no-fly zones pre 2nd Gulf War, or the Ottoman empire dismantling post WWI? If the latter, then the new "nation" or Iraq was just randomly drawn up by the British and French, without regard for ethnic or religious groupings, or hereditary homelands.

Civil war, at this stage is unpreventable and the ongoing occupation merely weakens western morale, governments and military forces that are best used elsewhere (see Afghanistan) in a genuine shooting-war.

Eh look - it's not an 'exit', it's a reduction in numbers from one particular area, it's over the next few months not weeks, and Blair doesn't need to 'survive' since he's already leaving in the summer.

There were a few interviews with Basra residents on the news, some of them were saying 'we don't want them to just leave' but others were saying 'the sooner they go the better, everyone knows they're responsible for the attacks and bombings'. I don't know if that was the exact quote but it really sounded like there was a belief that UK forces were actually setting off the bombs... anyway sounds like it'll be a party
