We all know that in the 80s, the entertainment industry wasn't fueled by ideas, but by smooth, fishscale yayo. Far from being a bad thing, the drugs made one of the worst decades ever into a freakish high concept, teeth grinding nightmare of awesomeness. Would Alf get green-lighted today? Hell no! House 2? What do you think? Small Wonder? Get the f*** off my forum! The 80s were all about drugs, awesome puppetry, and TV shows getting canceled about every 2 weeks and immediately replaced with something potentially even more cocaine-fueled. This is most evident when we look at the cartoons of the era.
Even moreso than the 2 decades before that codified the tradition of Saturday morning cartoons, the 80s churned a lot of shit that was on for no more than a month or two. I'd go so far as to say that there were more unique cartoon "franchises" created (and then quickly shelved) in the 80s than in any of the other decades where cheap, shitty animation ruled. Evidence? http://www.80scartoons.net/ Now, my challenge to you, my neoGAFfers, is to go through the listings, and pick out what *you* feel is the most cocaine-fueled cartoon concept of the 80s. I guarantee if you go through the listings, a few "WTFs" will be uttered. Anyway, my pick: Laverne and Shirley in the Army http://www.antoniogenna.net/doppiagg...yinthearmy.jpg I went easy and didn't pick anything too out there, but this one caught my eye due its sheer inessentialness. Did Laverne and Shirley really have enough of a young audience to warrant a cartoon spin-off? And even if it did. . .why the Army? Who thought this was a good idea? Even more puzzling, this wasn't even the only Laverne and Shirley cartoon spin-off. It looks like one featuring the Fonz aired after this series ended. I mean, teh Fonz is kinda forgivable, since L&S was a Happy Days spin-off, but still, did a 60s nostalgia show have a large enough kiddie audience to warrant us forcing cheap asian animation factors to make this probable shit? http://www.toonarific.com/pics_root/...eyfonzlogo.jpg Ok. Someone else. GO |

Without going into detail, I'll defend the ending as being appropriate to the series, though the execution wasn't helped by King rushing through the last three books in one go. Overall, however, they're still well worth reading and the first four volumes are terrific.
I'll be picking up the comic out of sheer Dark Tower fanboyism. It's a good sign that Peter David is on board to help King adapt everything to a comic book format, though I expect delays due to Jae Lee. Here's hoping. My local comic shop is doing a midnight launch, which Marvel is pimping. I'll drop by and hang out with the folks at Chapel Hill Comics for the occasion. FnordChan |

Kinda tough to pick one when most of the pages give me a 404 error. This one, however, caught my attention.
The Frankenstones ![]() The series set in Bedrock features the Flintstone's somewhat creepy neighbors. A show about the Flinstone's neighbors. There's potential. |
