I think it is facinating that people have nothing but praise for Muhammad Ali, yet the black athelete he spawned, the loud, obnoxious, self-involved braggart is nearly universally loathed.

For the record, Muhammad Ali is wittier than most of the guys he inspired, and I really do like him, but still.

My mom has a book autographed by Ali. She was a stewardess back in the day and had him on a flight. Apparantly he was being an ass and signed an autograph for a little black kid and not a while kid. She told him that was a screwed up thing to do. Later, he apologized and signed the autograph for the white kids too. When he disembarked the plane he gave her a copy of the book with $100 bill in it. I guess he learned a lesson.

He was a very important anti-war figure during the Vietnam War. You do realize that, don't you? "I don't have no quarrel with them Vietcong!" Ali was a tremendous public figure in addition to being a world champion in boxing. He famously threw away his gold medal into a river after being refused service at a restaraunt in the 60s.
