Well, it depends on how much running you've done in the past. Do you currently run on a regular basis? When I started running, I had no history of doing it before. It's good to just go out every other day and walk for a few minutes, run or jog for 5 or 10 minutes, then walk for a few, and keep alternating like that for a set amount of time. It's important to not overexert yourself while running though-- you should be able to hold a conversation with someone while running and not be out of breath, etc.

I'm not sure about distances. I think training yourself for running has less to do with how far you run and more to do with how much time you spend running. Bicycling could help you out, I'm sure.

I should also say that I've never ran a marathon before, and only run for my own personal benefit... So whatever I'm Hardcore says about running marathons is probably worth more to listen to.

Oh and you're welcome

My husband has this book called Chi Running, I've never read it but he says it's really good. Maybe it'd help you out some.
