i don't understand how a linear game with little to differentiate each play through can even be considered as the greatest game of all time

can't say that about the GIANT FOREARM DISORDER characters.
It pioneered the third dimension. It's pre-rendered backgrounds were orgasmic.

FF6 was a great game... have you played the PS remake with added cut scenes? They're neat, but the game isn't the same when you use your imagination to make the little sprite characters into real beings.

It's an RPG, first of all. Second, the end-game is where the fun begins, being an FF game. Furthermore, you fail at video games. The idea that you can't go too far from the path the game creates means that every game ever that has any sort of limitations or boundaries on play or even a game that HAS a story can't be even considered the greatest game of all time.

Oblivion had variable play... and it blew so damn hard. After 20 hours it becomes tiringly unplayable.

I fail at video games because I find it infinitely more re-playable (and therefore better) when I can play through seasons and seasons of simulated football with different variations and different teams and different play calling styles? Or play civ III and play different civs with different maps and different tactics and different strenths? Or I can play baldur's gate, which is a true RPG, with different characters, and use different tactics to fight enemies instead of waiting for my bar to fill and press O? Baldur's Gate is still static and linear but there's way more shit to do in it than running around trying to level up and get the Knights of the Round materia. You can make a case for Chrono Trigger since it has 7 different endings, but FF7...no.

I mean dude, come on. It's a great game and I loved it but I haven't played it, or had any interest in playing it, since the 90s.

and no one is talking about oblivion whatever that is. just because it's not linear doesn't mean it's automatically better in my opinion. I'm talking about replay value.

I tend to use my imagination to create my own characters.

so far the '00s have fucking rocked.

And I don't feel like they have gone all that quickly. New Year's Eve 2000 seems like forever ago to me. But I'm younger than most of you, so maybe that has something to do with it. The last few months have absolutely rocketed past me.

Counter-Strike:Source is infinitely more re-playable than almost any other game I've ever played, that does not make it better entirely.

I was just poking at hyberbole when I said you failed at video games.

Oh, we're talking about FFVII now? Yeah, I guess it hasn't technically aged very well, has it? That still didn't stop me from playing through it for the first time in a long time earlier this year. I really enjoyed FFVII when it first came out. Playing it again takes me right back to that time; I forgot about how the game stacks up to RPG's out now graphically. I just appreciated the game for what it is/was, and how it reminded me of how much I enjoyed it when I first played. Dare I say I enjoyed playing it again more than I did FFXII for the first time. FFXII is a huge let down. FFVII is still awesome. The only thing FFXII has that's better than FFVII is graphics. VII has better gameplay (materia is awesome), music, characters, story, you name it.

FFVI was fine, but Chrono Trigger is the best 16-bit RPG imo.

What do you play more? I mean that's the only qualification I have when choosing what the best game is as far as I'm concerned.

FF7 was the most beautiful game I ever saw, plus every character was cool (perhaps sans Cait Sith...), and it had a great story and it was fun. It was the perfect RPG and the best game ever made. It makes me sad that there will never be a game better than it, but it makes me happy because I played it.

Games like that you need to play when they're new to fully appreciate... My friend's brother, who is 12, played it and the little jerk thought it was merely okay. I hate when that happens. It was completely lost on him. The kid's an idiot though, so a REAL gamer would've appreciated it.

I once had a girlfriend who also recognized that FF7 was the greatest game ever made. She wanted an FF7 wedding, something I'd be down for... but she was sucky. Couldn't tolerate her otherwise. Her problem was that she was too much like me, which is never a good thing.
I know EXACTLY what you mean, man. I used to live with my friend and her family so I didn't have to commute to junior college, and she had a 10 year old brother who was the only boy in the family, aside from the dad of course, and so he was spoiled with all the video games and subwoofers money could afford. It was ridiculous how it affected his view on older games. I tried to share the old school FF love with him, but he wasn't having it. He pretty much shared the same views as Brendan, which is that it looked like "ass."

I'm curious to know when Brendan played FF7... If he played it when it first came out, or a few years after.
I wonder what I would've thought if I hadn't played it right when it came out. It definitely is my most favorite game ever, and I hold so much sentimentality and memories with it, it's amazing, but it is funny how present technologies can make the past look like, well, ass.

I remember playing it when I was 13 and thinking it was the most incredible looking game ever, and then going back 6 years later and being like, " Block hands?!?! "

To this day whenever I go underwater in the submarine I have to mute the tv because it seriously creeps me out. I still get choked up when you lay Aeris down in the water. Man, now I really want to play FF7 again. I think I get the urge every 2 years or so, and I'm definitely due up for another round.

i bought a ps1 just so i could play ff7 and it looked like ass then

i don't see how you can forgive something for having ugly characters that didn't match up with the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds, really.

it was my favorite shit ever until i started playing civ III, baldurs gate, and before Madden/college football for the PS2 came out.

Oh yeah, duovamp, I forgot to tell you... When I got married we had the piano collection version of Cloud's Theme playing on a loop while guests arrived, were seated, etc. It was pretty awesome, especially because no one knew it would be playing except for me and my brother (I made the playlist) and during the reception a few people I didn't know very well actually came up and said, "Was that Final Fantasy music playing before the ceremony?" :]

avian chaos: When you play again you will see that it's not that bad. I mean, the field characters always looked too blocky to begin with, quite honestly. But if you liked it as much as I did, it'll just remind you of how much it kicked ass nearly 10 years ago.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I don't think the game looked like "ass," it had it's obvious faults but I thought it was a very beautiful game despite it's obvious faults.
I know exactly what you mean-- I play the game once every two or three years because I get so hungry for that nostalgia and just being reminded that there was a game I enjoyed to the fullest extent.

Yep, exactly. And the execution and presentation still holds it all together. I'll admit some of the prerendered backgrounds are laughable (Cosmo Canyon, haha) and we've discussed the field chars. But honestly, the battle graphics aren't that bad. Overall it still has that magic. Or reminds you of what it was like so much, that the fact that it's very dated is nearly irrelevant.

I agree with the general sentiment that this decade is not as good as the nineties (both videogamewise and culturally) but I wasn't old enough to appreciate the nineties. This decade is, like, my generation's decade; so I'm associated with it by default and I have to like it. 'Sides its not that bad, there's always ways to get around the mainstream social circles and enjoy yourself.

Also nineties were better video gamewise for these games: Zelda Oot, Mario 64, Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter Alpha 3, X-com UFO defense, Master of Orion, Castlevania, Fallout, The original C&C (I miss you westwood!) and Homeworld.

Another weird thing is how people talk about the 90's like people talked about the 80's when I was a kid. And in the 90's people would be like "wow, they already talk about the 80's like it's so ancient, this makes me feel old". I know what they mean now.
