No, it isn't. It's to have the two best teams play each other. If someone thinks Florida is better then Michigan, I completely respect their voting Florida in. My "revisionist history" shows that I don't CARE about this all that much and I don't remember the Bowl Alliance and there might be a reason for the fact that it was disbanded considering the final scores of those games. Justifying the fact that 96 florida won the national championship by playing FSU again doesn't make your argument valid. In fact, since the Pac 10 and Big 10 were left out of this, makes this national championship game NOT a real national championship game. I think it's a personal choice, i see lots of teams doing the lateral instead of throwing the ball as far as possible now adays. Each is statistically improbable so it doesn't really matter which you pick I guess.

I have seen some teams do the short pass and run. I do think there's some advantage to at least assuring the ball gets in the hand of one of your playmakers, but its neglible statistically like Trotsky said.
