Default Upgrading cdrw to dvdrw on 15" imac g4 flat panel?

I don't know if anyone here has any experience with this, but being a mac newbie, I thought I'd ask. I'm wanting to upgrade the cdrw that's in my g4 imac to a dual layer dvdrw... but (and here's the stupid part) I don't know if I can use just any dvdrw that I buy, or if apple has propriatary (/sp) hardware that it will accept and nothing else?

I've found some directions on how to actually preform the swap, along w/ a 3 year old suggestion on which dvdrw to exchange the cdrw with, but I already have a dvdrw that I'd like to put in this comp... does anyone know if that would be ok?

That doesn't even remotely answer my question.

And yes, it would be super simple if it was on a pc. I wouldn't bother anyone if that's the case.

obscured... take a look here, this is what you'd be in for: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/i...takeapart.html

You'd need a Torx screwdriver. Otherwise it's fairly simple... probably easier to do this on a powermac than an iMac though. The drive is probably a standard PC part, with the front panels removed.

Try posting the model number on Apple's forums to find out:

its coz i know youre right. i had to take apart a couple of different powermacs at the studio and theyre like those fucking mind-puzzle things you buy for $10 and throw in the back of the cupboard because you get frustrated after about 20 minutes.

Once you work out the 'trick' to it, it's piss easy. "Unlock" the case, pull the handle. Easy.

there are service manuals all over the web just google search for your model and service manual and you will find the apple authored service manual for about every comptuer they make.

I've got instructions on how to take it apart, and exactly what to do after that. What I'm asking is if anyone knows if I can just swap the cdrw that's in there right now with any dvdrw (I have an old one from one of my pc's) or if apple requires certain brands/types whatever in order for it to work?

I'm just going to try it. I can't rip any movies on my ipod as my computer doesn't have a dvd drive and doesn't reconigize the dvd.

I wonder where I can get a Torx screwdriver... think I can just pick one up at a hardware store?

More likely to find a Torx screwdriver at an electronics store, say, Rat Shack. You may get some funny looks at a hardware store. I mean, they might have them, but what are the chances the staff will know what the fuck a torx screwdriver is?
