Default is it a common practice to put coconut in chocolate chip cookies?

i was munching on some trader joe's chocolate chip cookies and thought i tasted said ingredient, which is indeed found in the cookies. they're not advertised as being coconut chocolate chip or anything like that, so i was just wondering if this is a common practice or whatever. thank you, chefs of netphoria.

i don't know, but they SHOULD put it on the packaging. a lot of people are allergic to coconut.

it's nestled in the ingredients list, but it's not like, "hey, there's coconut in these chocolate chip cookies," on the front, so i suppose it's up to the allergic person to check. still...

it's not necessarily standard practice, but some people do it. i hate coconut, so i think they're nuts, but i'd be pretty angry if i bought a chocolate chip cookie and tasted coconut in it.

Trader Joe's probably has to find a way to make it taste more normal and coconut must do the job. My guess is we simply couldn't handle 100% pure natural chocolate chip cookies without coconut acting as a buffering agent.

i hate people that are really picky and don't like coconut in things.. it's really good in cakes and cookies.. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE MISSING.

my mom made some chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate chips once, for a friend who wanted to know what they'd be like. THEY WAS PRETTY GOOD.

cool.

I first tried to make them when I was about 13 and I have no clue what recipe I used, but they turned out weird. THankfully, my grandmother was still around and she fixed them enough to be edible.

Then I tried again, using a different recipe and they still turned out pecuiliar.

Maybe I just get the shit recipes that everyone throws away because they suck.

Now I want to use the recipe in betty crocker's cookbook like NOW to prove to myself that it was the recipes that suck, not my potential ability to make yummy oatmeal raisin cookies.

Toasted Oatmeal Cookies

2 1/2 cups quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

1. Heat oven to 350ºF.
2. Spread oats and walnuts in ungreased jelly roll pan, 15 1/2x10 1/2x1 inch. Bake 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until light brown; cool.
3. Mix brown sugar, butter, vanilla and egg in large bowl. Stir in oat mixture and remaining ingredients.
4. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet.
5. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slighty; remove from cookie sheet. Cool on wire rack.
(Total time will vary; cook or bake time is per batch.)

or:

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
3/4 cups butter, softened
3/4 cups shortening
3 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoons salt
4 1/2 cups regular (not instant) oatmeal
3 cups unbleached white flour
1 1/2 cups raisins
1 1/2 cups chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Cream together sugars, butter, and shortening, then beat in eggs and vanilla. Combine soda, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, oatmeal, and flour. Stir all but 1 cup of this mixture into creamed sugar-egg mix. Toss the 1 cup flour mix with the raisins and nuts.

3. Scoop up dough in large (#12) ice cream scoop onto greased or Pam-sprayed cookie sheet. Leaving a few inches between cookies. Bake until light brown (best when under-baked so slightly chewy), about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets right away. (For conventionally sized cookies, scoop by rounded teaspoonfuls, and bake 6 to 8 minutes).

NOTE: Batter can be frozen in scooped-balls, then baked off straight from freezer (keep your eye on them -- bake about 12-14 minutes).

Yield: about 21 very large cookies (or about 72 if scooped out by rounded teaspoonful).

good luck.
i might make some today. hmmm

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 seaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (i never add this)
2 eggs
1 seaspoon vanilla (i usually add a tablespoon)
1 3/4 cups flour
2 cups oats

preheat over 375f
in large mixing bowl beat butter with mixer on high speed 30 secnods.
add brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, if desired cinnimon/cloves.
beat till combined, scraping sides of bowl.
beat in eggs and vanilla till combined.
beat in flour - depending in your mixer you may need to switch to hand mixing at this point.
hand stir in oats.
add raisins or nuts as desired (1 cup raisins is basic, i use prolly 1 1/2, bu ti like raisins - chopped nuts are good too, about a cup if you like.)

drop dough on greased cookie sheets in desired cookie size (1 -2 inch diameter spoonfuls is about right.
bake 8-10 minutes, or until cookies start to get golden brown.
