Thumbs up I just might be getting my driver's license back.

I went to my neurologist today and the meds I've been on for the last three months have been working so well (and with very limited side effects) that if all of this keeps up than I might be able to trade in my state I.D. card for a driver's license. I go back in February and my state I.D. has to be renewed in March but if everything keeps going well my neurologist will write a letter to the state saying I am fine to drive. I'll have to take a driving and written test again but just the possibility has me excited. And in addition to being able to drive again, people won't look at me like I'm mentally handicapped or something when I get carded.

So, yay. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I can write you a reference letter, too, if it helps.

Thanks, but I think this and one from my regular doctor will do it. I'll have to look more into what the state requires but I don't think I'll need it.

are you comfortable driving knowing you could have a fit at any moment? If it were me i would not want to drive all that much. I suppose it depends how bad it is though?

Well, that's why I haven't driven in three years. It fluxuated a lot between relatively good times and very bad times and I've switched meds a lot which didn't help. I haven't gotten a major seizure in three months, which is the longest period of time since they came back. I still get minor ones, which I can feel coming and usually just affect my speech or something else I can control.

Yeah, especially in the middle of a sentence or something but compared to what I had been having it's nothing.

Believe me, I understand. I have to see the neurologist soon. My pills are beginning to lose their effectiveness. And if they object to my driving, I can't live in LA. I'd have to change everything - career, home . . . everything.

One time I was in mid-sentence with my boss when I forgot how to talk. That was fun.

I remember once I was on the phone with a patient and she asked for my boss' name right as my boss came in and I could only bring myself to spit out her first name. Even with her standing right in front of me, my mind was just gone.

I thought you only had yours mainly at night?

Good times, huh?

I do have them at night, but they're stricter here in LA since it's all about driving here. Plus, if they know if I have those other seizures during the day, even though I can "control" it, they can object. So here's hoping.

It varies. When I was younger I had what they called petit mal seizures which basically just looks like the person is spaced out except for sometimes a motor twitching or rapid eye blinking. It's the kind people like to associate with loud, colorful cartoon shows with being the cause. I outgrew that and now experience everything from momentary lapses in verbal functioning (like stammering, talking in gibberish, problems comprehending written words) to what most people think of when somebody says "seizure" which is a full-on loss of consciousness, motor control and sometimes even incontinence. Those are called grand mal seizures. Hope that helps.

these are the best in bed and you wake up in the middle of your "incontinence." pfft. and you don't even get to enjoy partying first!

I've got my fingers crossed for you, Erin.

My boyfriend was having seizure-things (and still gets them, but they're not as bad) that started to affect his driving. Thankfully, they never got bad enough to merit his license being revoked and they found the cause... but they haven't fixed it yet. ugh. I get random little twiches, that usually just affect one side of my upper body.

I couldn't imagine not having a license, especially here where public transportation kind of blows.

christopher used to have grand mal seizures. he took himself off the medication when he went for a couple years without having one. he refuses to ever go on one of the medications ever again because it's injected and he says it feels like molten lava running through his veins and it kills his bones. plus he doesn't think he could ever inject himself daily.

he thought for a while that he was having seizures again but it turned out to be something else.
