Default what shaped your personality?

aka nature vs nurture.

also, do you think you would still have the same personality traits had you been born in a different decade/time?

my projects and reports have made me consider how my behavior and decision making choices have developed.
i've determined that i'm just going to blame my inability to spell & smell really good to genetics, but i'm going to claim the great personality traits like decisiveness and perceptivness as my own genetic development.

yes but the traits that the genes code for become more prominent over age.
say, alcoholism or the prevalence of athleticism in a family.

ehhhhhhhh

I think somewhat of it is nature

for instance,
my half sister was given up for adoption when she was born. my mom and her found each other when I was in middle school (I didnt even know she existed until then)

and the similarities between her, me, and my mother are pretty interesting. IT could be coincidence but I think there's a lot of predispositions that can definitely be nurtured into something else.

I do think a person's personality traits become more entrenched as they age, unless some life-redefining event occurs.

Are you talking to me?

If so, I've given it a lot of thought (obviously) and the proportions just seem right.

doesn't that mean from generation to generation? not really within the lifetime of one individual?

The nature versus nurture thing debate doesn't even really exist anymore since it's pretty obvious that both genetics and environment play a part in who and what we turn into. It's like the most outdated argument in psychology. Pretty much anything can have an effect on personality given the right circumstances to fester into something significant. I think genetics doesn't have as much to do with having us become good people as we like to think. Inherently, a lot of people are just lazy. It comes down to effort, not ability. If more people just tried harder, I think they'd find they are better people then they can do a lot more than they think they are capable of doing. The only thing holding them back is themselves, not what nature gave them.

But that just leads to the question of what makes any one given person lazier than the next.

Maybe laziness was too broad an example. I think there are people who feel that they are stuck in whatever situation they were born into, whether it is their environment or their genetic predisposition. They think they're dumb so they don't bother to try to make themselves any smarter; they were born into a poor family and instead of putting forth a modicum of effort to get out of it they simply find a sort of comfort in it and so on. There's that and then there is simple individual variation. Psychology can find patterns within the population that can point towards a path an individual might follow but we still can't say for sure that which individual will grow up to be well-adjusted or not with complete certainty. I'm probably not explaining myself well but I have an exam in a few hours so maybe once I get visual fields off my brain I'll be a bit more coherent.

Interesting. However you cannot ignore (or reduce in significance) the effect of parentally imparted emphasis with regard to the specific situation you represent. What I mean is if the parents do not value education (though not necessarily hard work, or financial betterment)), the child will tend to do the same etc. down the line of progressive generations.
