Thumbs up Heath Ledger on his "darker, more sinister" Joker for The Dark Knight

Just a couple of wee quotes really, but good to hear, from two different articles...

  • Come January, he starts playing the Joker, in Christopher Nolan's next Batman film The Dark Knight. "It's definitely going to stump people. I think it'll be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to be in the comics, darker and more sinister."

  • Q: How about playing the Joker in The Dark Knight? I have to admit, I would never have thought of you for the role.

A: I wouldn't have thought of me, either. But it's obviously not going to be what Jack Nicholson did. It's going to be more nuanced and dark and more along the lines of a Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what the comic book was after: less about his laugh and more about his eyes.

Wow. That's a pretty hefty nutpunch to Jack, yeah? "Oh, it won't be like Jack Nicholson's version. It'll be nuanced." It's like saying, "Oh, it won't really be like Jack's version. I'm going to actually act, y'see . . ."

No, I'm saying it was Jack Nicholson, Acting Legend. He could smear his shit all over a hospital wall and, provided he did it on-camera, James Lipton would still use a clip of it on Inside the Actor's Studio. Then he'd turn it over to the students for questions and some greasy-haired toad in a beret would go, "First, Mr. Nicholson, I just want to say that the way you handle your excrement is a great inspiration to us all."

I'm not saying that Jack isn't a genius, but it is most certainly possible for someone to interpret the joker in a more nuanced and dark way than he did.

So could Yahoo Serious. The first Batman film was like a fat little puppy with black eyeliner. Like, oo, you're a dark, mysterious, brooding little guy, aren't you? Yes you are! Yes you are! It was too cartoonish and cuddly for the dark look to have any effect.

Does that make sense?

You've pretty much lost me, I'm not sure where you're going. It's like you said Jack's version was nuanced and Ledger had a cheek saying that, then that it wasn't really but it doesn't matter cause it was Jack who is a legend, and now that there was barely any nuance and darkness.

I love the novelty of a new potential relationship.
I think about her all day.
Everything seems so much better in general, I laugh easier and louder, I make more stupid jokes….
It’s awesome, truly.

I'm actually looking forward to this, since I think that Ledger will make a great Joker.

The laugh is key. When he lets loose, it should scar your soul. Also, I hope he read The Killing Joke about 6 times in a row every day for a month as prep. And listened to Mark Hammill's vocal performance -- that, my friends, is the definitive Joker.

Batman Begins was mediocre at best, I don't get why so many people think it's great.

I did. Gave me fucking nightmares.

Oh, and Christ? My point wasn't that Nicholson's version was good. My point was that it's Nicholson we're talking about. He's just short of a cinema legend, and for a relatively new actor like Ledger to say something like that is . . . well, surprisingly indelicate. It's like Ashton Kutcher playing Rick in a remake of Casablanca and telling the press, "Yeah, it's gonna be totally different from Bogart's version. I'm gonna try to use subtext and play it more sort of, you know, straight."
