Question Coffee Shop Etiquette

Question:

If there is a line for coffee, is it rude to grab a table before getting in line, or should you go through the line first and THEN grab a table? My friend said grabbing a table first is a douchey thing to do, but I've never thought about it and always get settled into my table first.

In my opinion, I don't give a shit. I think it's illogical to wait in line first, especially if you have a computer/book bag and carrying a bunch of shit when there's an empty table close by. But if it's crowded, like it is today, I don't know - I guess some would consider it rude.

What as in theres two of you and one grabs a table the other goes for coffee? No problem with that..but I fail to see how you can grab a table and THEN get coffee.. someone would just take it!

I put my bag on the table. It's a small coffee shop, so I can see it. I'm not considering it like "marking territory", it's more that I don't care to hold it while waiting in line.

the marking territory part or the not wanting to carry it?

If I saw you do that I'd just think 'what a prick' and it'd put me in a bad mood for a while. Not because you were hogging tables, just because... you'd seem like an uppity twat like this guy :

Well I dunno dude. Maybe it depends on how big the table is and if you wouldn't mind it if other people sat beside you. I feel weird even on a train when I'm alone and theres a free seat beside me and people are kinda weirded out as to whether or not they can sit there. Duh. Of course.

are you guys serious? I would get a table. infact I did that the other morning at the hotel breakfast.

but I have to say at the college dining halls I would be really pissed off when people did that. not becuase they were assholes but because I'd have nowhere to sit and just be annoyed in general. You'd send a couple people into the food line and then the others would go and throw their bookbags down on an empty table to reserve it (at busy times of the day the tables would fill up entirely and it SUCKED walking around with your lunch tray until you found a place to sit) I think I've only seen a few times where people have taken a table even though it had peoples shit on it. Most people felt it was an unspoken rule and didn't sit anywhere even it so much had a hat or something on top of it.
