how does one make bagel?

not being american I wasn't exposed to these at a young age and have yet to understand the fascination with them - it just seems like some kind of savoury-not quite as soft-doughnut to me

yes well that's all very well Mike - but seriously what's up with the Bagel beyond bread baked in this particular shape ...

I have yet to get a straight answer out of anyone on this

They have a different consistency, and are boiled, not baked

so i've heard - they said they got them from a really old traditional place thats really popular but i can't remember the name. Thanks for the link but i'll think i'll just hit up the roommate for free bagels every time he visits home

It was either St-Viateur or Fairmount Bagels (http://www.fairmountbagel.com/eng/index.htm), those two are the staples.
