Default hey guys, it's me, i'm in the arctic, living in an igloo.

ok, no igloos at this time of year. but i'm in a pretty sweet little construction camp in the middle of the canadian arctic.

i'm going to post pictures in this thread all summer long whenever i have the time and patience. some of it will be work related, some just for fun. here it goes...

this is a typical shot from an inuit community. the kid just jumped into my picture. what a punk.

i love how that one container has to have "container" stamped right on it...like anyone could confuse it for a pool or a tree

to come at a later date, i hope:

wildlife shots: caribou, arctic fox (1 shot at a distance already), lemmings, snowy owls, swans, snow geese, eider ducks, canada geese, and arctic char (provided i can catch one).

i have seen all of these in the three days i've been here. i might also see musk ox and polar bears.

now back to writing this memo about the goddamn sewage lagoon. i hope you don't want a picture of that.

What exactly is it that you would say you do in the arctic? I hear the arctic is downsizing.

I don't think I've ever done that - so yeah, I'm up for the challenge. I read about saunas in Malmo, Sweden where you sit in there, get really hot and sweat, then you run out naked into the snow and jump into a freezing lake. Then I think you do it again

last one out is a popsicle!

i used to do something similar but not as extreme or cool when i was young (sit in a hot tub in november, jump into the unheated pool, back into the hot tub). it felt really gross, like all your pores were opened up and needles were seeping out of your skin, but not painful. or something. let's hope the arctic is kinder.

It's not that big a deal, the inuits are more of a novelty race

That sounds really awesome. Weird, but awesome. Now I really want to do that. People here keep telling us we'll get an opportunity to "Polar Plunge" - go jump into the below-freezing seawater and then out and run into the sauna. But every weekend it gets planned for, they end up cancelling it because it's too cold to get the chainsaw started, so they can't cut a hole in the sea-ice. Now I'm gonna be extra sad if we don't get to do it before the season's over.

Sweet pictures, Phaedrus! I especially like the first one.

What kind of work are you doing up there? If you wanna PM me your e-mail address, I'd love to trade stories, pictures etc. and see how living in the Artic is different/similar to the Antarctic. Your photos remind me of summer down here - which was crazy and awesome, and now I'm all nostalgic for the constant sunlight and warm weather. Post more!

in greenland there was a natural hot pool near the water so we ran from there into the sea and back again. it was so cold. it makes you feel badass to be in the same water as icebergs:D i miss icebergs
