I try to tip the most I can usually, unless the service is shitty of course...but I really only use food services and occassionally a hair stylist. I move my own shit, I clean my own car, and I carry my own bags and I don't use taxis, if I do someone else is paying. I gave my hair stylist a 50% tip last time. But my hair cuts aren't really expensive.

I didnt tip the people that delivered the mattress or TV. I consulted with two of my friends who actually had the job of delivering mattresses for a while and they said they hardly ever got tipped and it wasnt something they expected from people.

I tip waiters and pizza delivery people kind of a lot, usually about 25%. I have a real problem tipping hairstylists for some reason. i'm already paying a ridiculous amount for them to trim 1/4 inch off my hair; I don't see why I have to give another 10 bucks on top of that. usually i'll give a five to the stylist and two to the shampoo person, but that's it.

I hate tipping and the fact American companies rely on their patrons to pay the salaries of the employees.

It's bullshit and America is the really only country this is the case.

In Europe, money magically comes out of thin air to pay the salaries of employees? Of course the patrons pay the salaries of the employees!

I always tip 20% unless the service is real bad. More for exceptional service. Mark LeDrew is no cheapass.

Food Delivery: couple of dollars
Room Service: (never had to tip for this)
Bag Service (luggage carriers): (same as above)
Car Washers: couple of dollars
Furniture/Mattress Delivery (this is for Brady): (never had to tip for this)
Hair Stylists: handjobs (i cut my own hair)
Other: Waiting 15-20%, this doesn't count places where you order your food then go sit down.

I work at a place where I get tipped regularly, and every time I do, I feel verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry uncomfortable. especially because they try either try to slip it to me quickly and slyly (fold up the money, hide in their hand) or make a big joking deal about it (make it a point to notice that they're putting their change in the tip jar). it's really quite awkward for me.

I don't think tipping is really big in Australia. I tell the pizza delivery dudes to keep the change.

I sort of agree with you, but then again I'd much rather pay 15-20% more for American-quality service in a restaurant than the service you get overseas.

my answer for all of those would be 10-20% depending on the level of service, a buck or two for the stuff where % doesn't apply.

but that's where i get confused sometime. does a buck or two suffice, or is it always percentage based (for like the stylists, etc)?

I thought you guys had a certain percentage you tipped everyone. This sounds like a total nightmare where you go around either pissing people off or wasting money.

i'd keep it percentage based if there is a tab involved. like if it's a $50 haircut i'd probably tip 5 bucks or so.
