Angry I was given a staph infection from the ER . . .

. . . and now the LA times is interested in hearing my story. This was the email:

The Consumers Union Stop Hospital Infections Campaign has been contacted by a reporter with the Los Angeles Times who is writing an article about hospital-acquired infections. You wrote to us about your experience with a hospital acquired infection and indicated that you would be willing to share your story. Would you be willing to talk with the writer, Juliet Chung? Otherwise, I will not share your information with her.

Thanks for your help.

I had told the campaign I'd be OK with giving my story, but now I'm not so sure. I can't PROVE that the hospital gave it to me, though the virulent, extremely painful strain of staph is mainly found ONLY in hospitals, and the hospital was very vague when I asked about the test results - they never actually gave them to me. They know the government may soon get involved.

The initial trip to the hospital was for when I completely fucked up my ankle and they exposed me to the staph. I had to return two subsequent times due to what THEY gave me (SO MUCH PAIN) and I'm (or my insurance) is still responsible for paying for those trips which makes me real mad.

Anyway, since I can't prove for sure it was the hospital, I'm afraid I'd be drilled and grilled and questioned, etc etc.

But I'm still so mad! Should I talk to the LA times?

I'm more afraid if it gets printed, then the hospital is going to grill and drill me. I think the reporter will be more on my side.

Oh, wait - donkey cock. How'd you know? You keep making me blush!

When I was around 12 or 13 my uncle was sent back to prison for violating his parole, anyway he got really sick and was sent back up here to the hospital (I don't remember what was wrong with him I was just a stupid kid) but he ended up getting staph infection and died three days later.

I have no idea whether you sould talk to them or not... crazy situation. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Wow. Yeah, if it's not caught in time, or if it spreads fast, it can be deadly. Luckily, mine hadn't gotten into my bloodstream yet. However, it's a strain that's becoming epidemic (hence the news coverage growing and the call for Congress to get involved) that's hard to kill because it's a strain in hospitals that has been exposed to almost all antibiotics and has mutated and has become stronger.

They put me on two different antibiotics and hooked me up to an IV for an intravenous antibiotic. The pain in my foot was unreal and they had to slice it open, drain it and stuff it full of gauze, etc. I didn't know what it was at first when I went in thinking it was an infected spider bite. When I found out I had returned to the very ER that caused it (and had to go AGAIN), I was annoyed and paranoid they would expose me once more.

I almost lost my left leg to an antibiotic-resistant strain of staph 2 years ago, but I didn't catch it in a hospital. Nasty scar.

Dude, go talk to the LA times.

well, do you think that the hospital made some kind of error that caused you to get staph infection? hospitals take every precaution to keep the environment sterile but an occassional introduction of infection in a surgical procedure is unavoidable. i mean, what did they do that gave you staph?

i'm just trying to figure out why you're angry at the hospital for the event unless you perceive it more than you being one of those people who, statistically, unfortunately is introduced with an infection during medical care.

Did they give you morphine for that shit? I got a morphine drip for 24 hours when they operated on my infection. They also couldn't freeze my leg because they had to know if the tissue under the infection was dead or alive to decide if they were going to amputate. Mom wasn't kidding when she told you not to pick your bug bites, dudes.
