it was new haven 1/25/97. i was there and it was one of the loudest shows ive been to, but it would have sounded just fine to anyone wearing earplugs . you are stupid if you dont wear them at shows.
i remember it being all over the news here. i think i remember hearing they checked his past medical records and found out he had some problems with his ears before the show took place. even if the pumpkins show damaged his hearing further its his own fault to go to the show having a problem with his ears. of all people a professor of music should have known that |

This post makes me want to take your precious earplugs off you and make you stand in front of the speakers at a mogwai gig. |

Blocking your ears can actually make the sound clearer. Try it, block your ears with your fingers at a gig, and you'll be surprised. Not saying that i wear earplugs, but sometimes in small venues when it's too loud, blocking your ears makes the band clearer.

I have to be honest, I hate the whole 'you're a pussy and not a real man if you want to take care of your body' thing. I think that's old and retarded. I'm by no means a health freak though. If the show is essential, I don't wear ear plugs. If it's a shitty opening band, or something like that, then I do. I don't see a problem with that.

It's got nothing to do with taking care of your body, I've been in front of speakers at mogwai gigs in small venues and had no permanent damage, I simply think it's a waste of time wearing earplugs at a gig.

In your room? Um. It depends. On how high. You turn up the volume control on your fucking DVD player. Don't say "Volume up all the way" because we don't know if you're listening through $5 computer speakers or a huge Nexo line array with 20 subs per side... The only thing you can measure on the DVD is maybe how loud it gets in dBFS - Full Scale decibels (i.e. digital - 0dB = full scale = all 24 bits set to "1" = 111111111111111111111111). From that point on, it depends on your DVD player, the amount of signal loss through your cables, the amplifier wattage, the amplifier construction, the way they came about the wattage rating of the amplifier, the THD of the amplifier, the THD of your speakers, the rated output of the speakers, the way they came about that rated output, the material used for the speaker cones, the size of the speaker box, the size of the speaker cones, the porting of the speakers, the size of the speaker baffle, the speaker placement, the size of the room, your distance from the speakers, the shape of the room, the materials the walls are made of, the amount of sound absorbing material in the room... and many other factors. Yeah, that's what I meant. New Haven 1/25/97. That would be my SECOND Pumpkins concert, and second concert ever. It was kind of a long time ago, so you understand the confusion.

You didn't really give a reason for why you don't wear the plugs either. That Mogwai gig probably DID give you permanent damage. How would you know? It affects you over time, not immediately. |

I don't go to a huge amount of shows every year, apart from the year before last when I was playing in a relatively loud band a lot in glasgow, and of all the bands I'll always make the effort to see, the gwai are easily the loudest. I don't wear earplugs for multiple reasons but mainly as I stated above, it just seems daft to me, paying for a gig and then putting in earplugs.
The whole thing that started me off on this was the guy who said you are stupid if you don't wear em. If he's going to make blanket statements like that then I thought I'd make a blanket statement like you are a pussy if you do. Don't take it personally, it's only the intrawebz. I hope the mogwai gig did give me permanent damage because you get indie cred multipliers for shit like that. |

As an audio engineer, I always wear plugs at gigs. I can't afford to have ringing ears two days after - and I teach 13 students as well, so "good example" and all that shit.
With plugs in, you still see the band, you still hear them - and there's a way to put earplugs in, where they don't totally kill the treble, you put them in and then pull them out until they're *just* in there - and you still FEEL the bass, but the sound doesn't hurt your ears, it doesn't sound distorted, the balance is better, you get a clearer sonic picture. Also, the foam plugs are awful - the rubber "christmas tree" type are somewhat better - custom moulded plugs are about $100 and are the best investment into band equipment I've ever made, they fit snugly in the ear, and after the first minute or so, you totally forget that they're there - and it just makes everything quieter, but keeps the same sound quality. The flipside of "why would you wear plugs at a concert, i bet your mother lays out your concert clothes for you" is... why the fuck would you pay $100 to listen to painful, distorted noise, when for the price of seeming vaguely "uncool" for a half a second, you can get a much clearer, more defined auditory experience? |

It's got nothing to do with seeming uncool, in fairness the only earplugs ive ever had were the shitty ones you mentioned before, also read my last post re: don't take it so seriously.
