Yeah, I know they play field hockey and they're in the world cup soccer finals and that, but do any of your (assuming you're an american) national teams win stuff?
And I don't mean playing Basketball every 4 years at the olympics ot beating canadians on ice. ------------------ http://www.phatjoe.com/lameass/icons/panda.gif Darnce, Panda! |

C'mon - answer the damn question.
Sheesh. I'm sure there's some sport out there that you are world champs at, but I just can't put my finger on it. Let's see... Soccer Rugby Union Rugby League Cricket Hockey (field, not ice) ... {edit - } Mungo - actually, the USA are the Olympic champions in Rugby Union. Since they won it in 1924. I'm not clear on what you're asking. Of course the U.S. has national teams for just about every sport. And if we win stuff at some of those sports mentioned, well, we'll never know about it. Sports like cricket, rugby, even soccer get very little coverage here and I wouldn't be surprised if our country's rugby or soccer or whatever team sucks. Seeing that these sports get little attention here, our best athletes don't recognize them and opt for sports that are more popular (track+field, hockey, baseball etc.) I'm very very disappointed at the sparse attention the World Cup is getting here. I haven't seen ABC or ESPN run any promos for the World Cup yet, and the local big name newspapers bury World Cup coverage in some page other than the front page of the sports section.

You only play against other countries if its a sport you invented and you're absolutely sure that you're going to win. ie: Basketball.

Down here, we live for test matches. Rugby (Union and League), Cricket. Don't you want to feel the undeniable feeling of superiority after beating England by 120 runs? but that's the point. As an outsider, all I see when you're talking about sports is it's all on a local level. I'm not talking clubs here - I'm talking countries. And to counteract your point - why don't the US play baseball against Japan or Cuba? Fuck, even softball gets played on a global level by more than 3 countries. ------------------ http://www.phatjoe.com/lameass/icons/panda.gif Darnce, Panda! |

the baseball question is interesting...it would be great to see the Pro's in the Olympics or some other tourney...many latin countries and Cuba would put up some good teams. The *******an Republic especially, and Japan. But the U.S. would kick some serious butt cuz no other country could even come close to the pitching here in the states.

Speaking of sports, I live in Raleigh so we have a hockey team that's in the finals and everyone here is going absolutely crazy.

Also, the U.S. is a very large country made up of smaller states that rival each other much like European nations rival each other. It's not that we're reluctant to go against other nations, it's just more exciting with our intra-national competition than international.

As you know, you do play sports on a global level. It's just that you tend to prefer sports that are localised, which for a juggernaut country such as the US seems a bit odd. ------------------ http://www.phatjoe.com/lameass/icons/panda.gif Darnce, Panda! |

It's too bad that the soccer world cups gets so little coverage, in the US. It's very big in europe, africa and asia, so basiclly its only America thats left behind. I bet that the US could get one of the most feared soccer teams if the sport was big there, just consider how many players they could pick from...
