This is what I want to know. Didn't he recently do some huge production at a super bowl or some award show? I saw it on TV a couple years ago.

it's an ironic genius. the man knows how to play the game. anyone with any sense hates what he does but you cannot deny the fact he is a marketing force to be reckoned with. I also felt that, as crazy dumb as TitC was, good lord did it keep him in the public consciousness for an inordinate period of time.

i agree with you on this. But i think people should make a distinction between "marketing genius" and "lyrical/musical genius". right?

well that's why it's ironic.

to a certain extent I think it should simply be obvious replicated in a persons work. when we say einstein, mozart, and napoleon were all geniuses, we understand that they were brilliant in their individual fields. seeing as how the majority of pop music is in fact marketing and not artistic, there's a certain point when you have to realize that r kelly is a genius of pop music - that is, he is a genius about being popular.

to call him solely a marketing genius though would be selling him a little short, it's the whole package rly

true, and I think I came to that point (eventually) by calling him a genius of popularity. the entire package makes him genius. he understands how to become a marketable commodity within the paradigms of r&b by relying on the tropes of the stylized "gangsta"

oh god I hate college

well right. r&b is a subgenre of pop music, but for ease I just use pop. jay-z is an example of the brilliant rapper, while there is a plethora of examples in rock - although I have to wonder about their actual involvement within their marketing because their music seems divorced from the actual cultural presence

wtf

next you'll be saying dr. phil is a genius for creating a multimillion-dollar evil empire by taking advantage of his title and the wholesale exploitation of people's insecurities

possessing shrewd business sense AND some kind of highly-appealing ability is rare, yeah, but i don't see how it's genius. r kelly and dr phil aren't doing anything creatively or intellectually amazing; they're just good at taking people's money
