Red face applying to graduate schools

is a daunting task.

choosing where and why and how. arg.

i'm considering several design schools...but the one that has caught my attention the most has been Konstfack in Stockholm. Tuition is free, but i have to find a way to either get work there or get a scholarship to cover living expenses

:/

i kinda wish i had a choice. but then the effort involved in choosing phases me.

go somewhere cool - the locale, not the school that is.

i'm roped in by finances in terms of my master's. if i decide to get my phd, I hope to be able to get into columbia or nyu (best and second best phd programs for art history, respectively). who the fuck knows if that'll happen, though

you're so wise
but yeah i was thinking of getting some sort of job for a year or something. but that would also require serious thought on my part, so i guess i was just trying to convince myself to do just that.

are you sure it's free for you as well? Usually it's only free for citizens. I'd highly doubt Swedish government is all eager to provide free education for the rest of the world as well.

Question

The grad program i'm going to be in is one where there is no thesis. I am hoping this doesn't hurt me when I apply elsewhere to get a doctorate. anyone have thoughts on this?

My master's program didn't require a thesis either, instead I did a capstone project (with a 110-page report). For me, job/resume wise, it proved to be far better. As far as doctorate programs go, three friends from my grad school program applied to doctorate programs and they were all accepted. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but not doing a thesis didn't hurt them.

Thanks. I know it's anecdotal evidence, but it still makes me feel better hahah.

Are there tuition fees at Swedish universities and university colleges?

With rare exceptions, all tuition fees in higher education in Sweden are subsidised by the government. This applies to foreign as well as Swedish students. Higher education is fully financed by the state, a system common to many European countries. You will still have to cover living expenses and pay student union fees, though.
