Question iPod phone details leaked

Analyst leaks iPod phone launch details

Secret plans for the launch of an iPod phone have been leaked in advance of the official Apple launch, it is believed by an industry analyst. Apple is expected to announce a partnership with Motorola, the handset company, and Cingular Wireless, the mobile service provider, to market a mobile telephone that doubles as a digital music player.

Speculation over the anticipated release began when Apple issued invitations for a press conference. The invitations hinted that Apple was about to launch a product that would cause as much of an impact as the iPod.

The famously secretive Apple usually never discloses details about unreleased products, but did, on this occasion, let slip that the featured gadget was "music related". However, plans for an iPod phone had already been widely discussed, with Motorola named as Apple’s partner. It had been speculated that the missing piece in the jigsaw was a mobile provider willing to jump on board.

"You are marrying the most successful music player with a cell phone," Roger Entner, a vice president of Ovum, the telecoms analysts, said.

According to Mr. Entner, Apple has now joined with Motorola and Cingular to offer its online iTunes service, from which users buy and download music.

"Now, you have a choice between talking to your spouse on the phone or listening to music," he said.

According to Mr. Entner, the first iPod phone will be available in two models, with either 512MB or 1GB of storage. The larger model can hold up to 240 songs. The handsets will reportedly be the first in a series called "Rokr". Several other music-playing phones are already available on the market. Earlier this month Sony released its first Walkman phone, an attempt to revive the iconic brand that dominated the 1980s in the same way as the iPod has become the must-have gadget of the 2000s.

Madonna, others to star in Motorola iTunes phone ads

Motorola has gotten Madonna, Iggy Pop and several other music acts to star in commercials for its upcoming iTunes-enabled mobile phone, according to reports.

“Motorola has signed an artist from every generation to appear in the ads, including Little Richard, Bootsy Collins, Lil’ Jon, The White Stripes, Sleater-Kinney, Sum 41, Mya, Pussycat Dolls and Billie Joe from Green Day,” reports Brand Republic. “Look-a-likes of Beethoven, Jimi Hendrix and Biggie Smalls are also featured.”

“Madonna, who was recently in the press after falling from her horse during her 47th birthday celebrations, filmed her piece for the ad at Shepperton Studios yesterday. A Motorola spokesman refused to comment on the ads but confirmed that Madonna and Iggy Pop were to star.”

Those iRiver things have been around for ages.

And it doesn't matter if they have better features or whatever, because people don't buy iPods based solely on features; it's some strange combination of marketing/branding/brainwashing, ease of use and iTunes interoperability. What's kind of surprising is that they've become ubiquitous but are somehow still seen as being cool. How long can that possibly last?

i don't really get excited about it. i use my ipod mostly in the gym and i don't want to have my phone on me in the gym. and i like my phone to be real small and wouldn't find 1 gig of space enough to make the music end satisfying. i also like to be able to get a phone every year or two and i'm guessing the pricetag would make that less likely with this one

but i'm sure it'll be the bee's knees for tons of people

1) i have a laptop which makes it slightly different
2) i do, however, have a spare PS2 (PS2 is the circular connector as opposed to USB...) keyboard, and i probably only need a PS2 to USB converter to make it work. however, my computer seems to always redetect my laptop's keyboard (and thus the .......... eminating from it), so it has discouraged me from going to best buy to get the converter, even though it's possible that having a new keyboard hooked up MIGHT make it stop "finding new hardware" (ie, finding my laptop's keyboard). i'm just lazy and unoptimistic about it
3) i am going to send the whole computer in to have it fixed, probably next week
4) i don't mind pissing everyone off with the .........s (payback, suckers), and only a neanderthal couldn't determine what my posts say.

and the biggest supporting factor to me not replacing it is:
5) it pisses me off enough that it either keeps me off the computer for the most part, and/or forces me over to my health club to run and post. like now.

Like Liz said, it's about integration. People said the same thing about phones with cameras built in and now they're everywhere, and they're approaching the same quality as the nicer digitals. You can even record movies on them. The same thing's kinda happening with PDAs. It shouldn't be unexpected really.

That said, with the ipod's battery reputation combined with the way phones drain power, all I can say is 'ouch!'
