For all those frustrated Democrats who are considering a move to Canada, we offer a few closer alternatives.

Our list of "Most Liberal Places in America" is based not on opinion polls, which have come under fire in recent elections, but on votes, political contributions and demographics. The rankings, at right, show nationwide picks by the size of the community and statewide rankings for 29 states.

We considered the following data in making our selections:

Individual contributions to PACs
We analyzed 1.8 million contributions to 2,300 political action committees that could be identified as Democratic/Liberal or Republican/Conservative. This data, for the 2003-2004 election cycle, was downloaded from the Federal Election Commission on Nov. 9.

Election returns
Unofficial election results in the 2004 presidential race were reported at the county level for every county in the U.S., and at the local level for many New England communities.

Gay households
This index was compiled from the U.S. Census by Gary Gates, a demographer at the Urban Institute and co-author of The Gay and Lesbian Atlas. Figures were *******d for the 1,360 U.S. communities in which 50 or more couples reported living in such relationships.

Local government resolutions opposing combat in Iraq

Local officials performing gay marriages

Congressional District voting history
(Note: Because this factor was part of the screen for rankings, Washington, D.C., which does not have congressional representation, was excluded from our study. Washington residents who do not live in the White House showed strong liberal leanings in their votes for president and political contributions. The city also has a large number of gay households.)

Not really. I'm from Houston and go to school in Austin. Austin has tons of liberals, true, but it's also balanced out by a big conservative group. Bellaire, around downtown Houston, is almost 100% upper class liberal Jewish.

that's so insighful! i wonder, what makes you qualified to make such remarks? in most places in this country, being a career teacher requires a masters degree - a huge investment, given the economic trade off. this is the primary reason why i am in logistics, despite the fact that i went to school to be a teacher. it seems to me that you have a problem with public schools, and that you assume that teachers are lazy people looking for hand outs. if that is true, again, i must ask you to qualify your beliefs, or leave everyone to assume that you are ignorant of the facts of this discussion. thanks!

Generally from what I've seen, "pursuing education and expanding knowledge" is a euphemism for "afraid to get a degree that means something and go out in the real world and put knowledge to some use." Most people I know who have gone the higher education route (ie. master's/PhDs) are just waiting for an excuse to feel smarter than someone else. They have no interest in dealing with equals. The reason people identify higher education with liberals is because liberals wear their higher education like a badge that says "Look at me. I'm smarter than you." Its the end-all, be-all to them...so most are content to stay at the University and bask in the glow. Whereas, conservatives who go through higher education just see it as a means to an end. A way to get skills that will be used elsewhere.

But that's just my generalized take, based on the handful of people I know.
