That was the moron Kypper's way of making it so my opinion wouldn't win in this little poll.

that kind of stuff has very little importance to me. i kind of find a piece of metal on my finger as a symbol of commitment kind of odd.

i am aesthetically incline, but when it comes down to it, it doesn't mean much.

I want a diamond, I really do
I think that you should give me one
Then you can prove your love is true
And that the gift giving has just begun

I want that diamond, I want that thing
A tennis bracelet, a ring
It better shine, it better cut
I know it is expensive but...

What other way can you make four months of your measely salary last a lifetime
And what other thing have I ever asked you for
Besides...
The ability to read my mind
And I didn't get that either, Yet

I want that diamond, I want it so
All of my irritating friends will know
That I have worth, not only that
But that you love me even though I'm fat

I want that thing, I want it now
I'll say it once, I don't care how you get it
You can rob a store, There just is nothing I want more
Than diamond jewelry for me
And I'll talk louder so you see how very much it means to me!
Even some little stud earrings
Give me the goddamned diamond!!!

Although, really.
The only thing matters is that your significant other wants to be with you for the rest of his life... or for at least as long as you guys can stand each other.

And I think Desi's ring is pretty. It's the perfect size... something bigger would be irritatting to wear everyday, it would get in the way of daily activities, and it would get dirty.

The only problem I have with Smiley33's ring is that it's gold... I just don't happen to like the colour gold...

Other than that. It's fine. *Thumbs up*.

Certainly one should go all out in purchasing this stuff, as it shows devotion and a willingness to sacrifice (and that's what it is, isn't it?) for the person you love. I'm far too young to be thinking about these things, but I certainly wouldn't mind

However, what if she just doesn't want it? There are some women who simply don't want a flashy, expensive ring and would rather have the money spent on something else for her and her beau. That last part is important; there's a vast difference between spending that money on, say, a down payment for a house/things needed for an apartment, and on the other hand things for your GameCube/beer.

Some girls are more practical than others, as are some men, and it's ridiculous to apply one standard to all situations--which is why I think you're being ridiculous here, Aff. If he's happy and she's happy, who the fuck are you to tell them they're wrong? Yes, as you said, the social stigma exists, but as Elisabeth said, if she doesn't want the rock, why is he wrong in putting that money towards something that the both of them obviously need, e.g. living expenses? You haven't answered that question yet.

I'd really love to have an antique ring, I'd love it if it was a family heirloom. That would be so sweet. My ideal ring is white gold or platinum art deco style with some kind of decorative rock. A big diamond would be great, but whatever. I'd be happy with a little gem just as long as it meant something.

thank you.

Frankly, I don't appreciate having myself or my tastes insulted. However, it just doesn't bother me. I don't need other people telling me what I should like and what is proper. (That's one reason I don't live close to home. ) I'll be the judge of that.

A ring is a symbol of eternity. Same thing with the snake eating its tail (I think that's more of a Pagan symbol)...anyhow...a ring is a circle, a circle never ends.
That's kinda why its a symbol of commitment...you'll go on for eternity, just like the ring.

Make sense a lil?

thanks for the attempt to enlighten, but this is not new to me.

i'm just perplexed as to how it's gotten from what it's intentions were (what you've just stated works beautifully as the mold) and what it has become now: a question of what kind and how big the stone and how much it costs.

i guess i just think it's lost its meaning or importance in the midst of all of this bullish.
