Talking chriss angel is an asshole...

he acts like such a cock when he confronts people one the street and acts like he's fucking god when he does a trick.
he's trying to be like david blaine, but he isn't doing street magic. he's doing masturbatory fire and disappearing tricks.

i hate the guy, and his cheesy pseudo goth personality, but some of his tricks are incredible. They showed a picture of him at 13 floating his mom in the air.

His trick where he lit a voodoo doll's arm on fire and the participant's arm started to burn.

Well, close-up magicians traditionally go with one of two levitations: the first is the Balducci Levitation. It has the advantage of involving zero props or audience plants, but it is very angle-specific, and requires the performer to feel out the audience a bit first. If you have the kind of audience who is always going to try to throw you a curve in hopes of messing up the trick, chances are the Balducci will fail. Otherwise, though, it's a fairly simple, impressive-looking 3-5-inch levitation, and it's quick enough that you can make an impression and move on without a lot of "how'd he?" to distract the audience.

The other popular one is the Rising King levitation, or a variation thereof. Again, it is gimmick-free, but it involves a longer set-up and is even more angle-specific than the Balducci. However, the illusion itself is often received more favorably, if only for the reason that the "air-time" is usually greater. There are a number of variations, such as the "Neolift" that are still practiced by the pros. This is also generally where you start when you want to go the Criss Angel or David Blaine route and (ooooooooooooo, spoilers...)

...start introducing plants and hardware. So solly cholly, the TV mavericks, while VERY skilled with the above "pure" methods, as well as many others, still fall back on hand-picked audiences, out-of-shot cranes, and video editing. What's sad is the Criss Angel's version of the high fliers almost always ******* the gentle side-to-side swaying of his feet in the air that make you think, "Wow! It's almost as if he's being hoisted by a crane!" Most audiences confirm, I think, that levitations in close-up magic are best when they are brief and placed early on in the routine. It's very helpful when performing an illusion to have the audience still wondering how you did the last one. But it's actually pretty silly the way that close-up magic is televised. It's like, "There will be cameras! So you'll be able to see EVERYTHING!" Because, you know, television never lies.
