for those of you who have not seen War of the Worlds... it's not as great as all the faggots on here have said. the first 30-45 minutes are cool, after that the storyline degrades into pure blubber and becomes entirely gay. further more they explain roughly nothing and assume you have studied the book.

i like spielberg, he is one of the few directors besides kubrick i generally like enough to just go see a movie because of direction alone. Though i dont know about this one- he does have a tendancy to go a little too sentimental sometimes. |

The interesting parts of it were the examinations of human desperation and the lengths we will go to hurt each other in order to survive.
I found it pretty dull, to be honest. It seemed very repetitive. There was some amazingly beautiful shots and it was really cool to look at, but I just felt like the same thing was happening over and over again. Cruise's character was also a fucking cunt. |

even if you don't dig the later half of the movie, its worth it for the first chunk. Hell, the first tripod scene is worth the ticket price alone. Screw that, the single unbroken shot when Cruise is running is worth it.

http://www.alcyone.com/max/lit/worlds/2-8.html And scattered about it, some in their overturned war-machines, some in the now rigid handling-machines, and a dozen of them stark and silent and laid in a row, were the Martians -- DEAD! -- slain by the putrefactive and disease bacteria against which their systems were unprepared; slain as the red weed was being slain; slain, after all man's devices had failed, by the humblest things that God, in his wisdom, has put upon this earth. For so it had come about, as indeed I and many men might have foreseen had not terror and disaster blinded our minds. These germs of disease have taken toll of humanity since the beginning of things -- taken toll of our prehuman ancestors since life began here. But by virtue of this natural selection of our kind we have developed resisting power; to no germs do we succumb without a struggle, and to many -- those that cause putrefaction in dead matter, for instance -- our living frames are altogether immune. But there are no bacteria in Mars, and directly these invaders arrived, directly they drank and fed, our microscopic allies began to work their overthrow. Already when I watched them they were irrevocably doomed, dying and rotting even as they went to and fro. It was inevitable. By the toll of a billion deaths man has bought his birthright of the earth, and it is his against all comers; it would still be his were the Martians ten times as mighty as they are. For neither do men live nor die in vain. Its in the voice over at the end. Its not word for word, but that's basically the ending you get in the flick. |

i was shocked that people liked it so much here, even considering netphorian bad taste. i saw the trailer and it looked abysmal, i'll probably check it out sometime though

furthermore, I don't care about the stupid ending staying true to HG Wells' stupid original ending. my argument is they should never have adapted it in the first place. it's entirely ridiculous that aliens would massively attack like that. it makes absolutely no sense. furthermore, it makes no sense that they wouldn't be prepared for the biological differences in our air and water. so much of it is just not thought out. god. like I'm sure it was cool and scary back in the day, but it does not work anymore. |

HOWEVER - the difference is in Signs, the alien is like "ARGH! WATER!! IT BURNS!!!" immediately. That's silly - you stupid alien, you should have known that before you came round mah house. In War of the Worlds - its a gradual process. It sneaks up on them. They didn't see it commin'. Thats why I think it works better. Its still kind of a Dues Ex Machina, but its earned instead of just given as an easy out. Besides, you're attacking this movie from too much of a writerly / plotting perspective - killing any fun to be had. The best thing about the flick is how Spielberg works the camera, can set mood, using imagery and feelings from 9/11 throughout the movie, and his workin' of set pieces. Its a very visceral and visual experience - just seeing Spielberg setting up sequences and knocking them down. And it definitely benefits from a big ass honkin' screen with a huge loud sound system. |
