Default nautical miles

orenthal james brought this to my attention the other day and i was all like whoa and we were all like whoa.

a nautical mile is equal to one minute (1/21,600th) of the circumference of the earth.

i never knew that. never had any use for this information. but i still find it really fucking cool. and entirely logical.

well more specifically, a minute is one sixtieth (1/60) of an hour or a degree. so 1/60 * 1/360 = 1/21,600

meaning if you started at 90°W on the equator and traveled 60 nautical miles east, you will have arrived at 89°W on the equator.

also, the unit of speed, the knot, is equal to one nautical mile per hour.

if you are wondering where the 1/360 came from, there are 360° in a circle.

There are 360 degrees in a full circle, and you can divide each degree up into 60ths, called minutes. And you can divide each of those up into 60 seconds, if you like. It confused me when I first heard someone talking about minutes and seconds in the context of angles
