Default Is anyone here into building PCs

I'm thinking of getting a new one. I only have a laptop and I can't run Doom3 nor Republic Commando. I need pixel shaders

well i'm trying to decide whether to just buy something that will do the job or go for an overclockable relatively futureproofed system, if it's not too expensive.

I would say £500-1000. I'd rather not go much over £700 tho.

I'm looking at a DFI SLI-DR mobo, Athlon 64 3000+ as a base. Plan to get 2x 80Gb Seagates w/ NCQ for RAID0.

anyways:

Socket 939 AMD64 motherboard with matching processor

1 gigs of RAM

GeforceFX6800 series videocard (preferrably the GT, or even an ultra)

That should keep you happy with Doom3 and whatnot. My borther has a similar system, and with 12x anit-aliasing and 8x anisotropic filtering, the thing still runs like a dream. The only limiting thing is his screen resolution. Be aware that having an 6800 ultra is like having a vacuum cleaner in your computer, noise-wise.

too late with my reply

an 6800 ultra is rather expensive, it's 500 euros. I'd pick a somewhat more expensive 939 AMD64 than the other one (754 or something), because the 939 will be the processor type that's going to be upgraded.

and oh yes, i have an AMD64 754 3200+ with 512mb ram, and a geforceFX5700 ultra. It does the job for doom3, it does more than the job for halflife 2.
