http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,16100,00.html Country Singer Chris LeDoux Dies by Julie Keller Mar 10, 2005, 3:35 PM PT Chris LeDoux has ridden into the sunset. The former rodeo star, who became a country singer whose records influenced the likes of Garth Brooks and sold upward of 6 million copies, died Wednesday in Casper, Wyoming, succumbing to a long battle with liver cancer. He was 56. a d v e r t i s e m e n t E! News Live Top5 Videos "In a world of egos and soundalikes, he was a unique artist and a wonderful man," Mike Dungan, Capitol Nashville president and chief executive, said in a statement. A true cowboy, the Mississippi-born LeDoux got his start on the rodeo circuit in the 1970s. He paid for his entry fees by performing music, and he eventually became a champion, winning the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's world bareback riding title before calling it quits in 1980. Upon his retirement, he took up singing and songwriting full time, releasing 22 albums touting the cowboy way via his own Lucky Man Records. Most of his albums were cassettes produced by his parents and sold to a small but loyal fan base at rodeos throughout the country. His biggest break came when Brooks gave him props in the 1989 hit "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)," which featured a lyric about "a worn-out tape of Chris LeDoux, lonely women and bad booze/seem to be the only friends I've left at all." The Brooks reference gave LeDoux a huge career boost, and he was signed by Capitol Records in 1990. In 1992, he teamed with Brooks for the duet "Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy," which cracked Billboard's country Top 10. "To me, Garth, he's kind of like my guardian angel," LeDoux said in a 2001 interview with the Associated Press. "It's like every time I need some help, he's there." LeDoux's best known songs *******d "Hooked on an 8 Second Ride," "Copenhagen," "This Cowboy's Hat," "Even Cowboys Like a Little Rock and Roll," "Riding for a Fall" and "Honky Tonk World." His most recent album, Horsepower, his 15th on Capitol, was released in 2003. He was diagnosed with liver disease in 2000 and underwent a liver transplant. Late last year, doctors discovered cancer in his bile ducts. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and five children. |
