Rangel calls for mandatory military service

Monday, December 30, 2002 Posted: 1:46 PM EST (1846 GMT)

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-New York

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Democratic lawmaker said Sunday he will introduce a bill in the next session of Congress to make military service mandatory.

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-New York, said such legislation could make members of Congress more reluctant to authorize military action.

"I'm going to introduce legislation to have universal military service to let everyone have an opportunity to defend the free world against the threats coming to us," Rangel said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"I'm talking about mandatory service."

The Korean War veteran has accused the Bush administration and some fellow lawmakers of being too willing to go to war with Iraq.

In October, he voted against a joint resolution authorizing military action against Iraq. It passed 296-133 in the House and 77-23 in the Senate.

"When you talk about a war, you're talking about ground troops, you're talking about enlisted people, and they don't come from the kids and members of Congress," he said.

"I think, if we went home and found out that there were families concerned about their kids going off to war, there would be more cautiousness and a more willingness to work with the international community than to say, 'Our way or the highway.' "

Rangel did not provide specifics of his proposal.

A Prayer for a Parking Spot

Oh, divine and merciful God,
History is without equal for how much I will adore you,
when you give me today,
a place to park.
For you are the provider.
And you are the source.
From you all good is delivered.
Within you all is found.
In your care will I find respite.
With your guidance, will I find peace.
To stop, to rest, to idle, to park.
These are yours to give me.
This is what I ask.
Amen.

Don't worry that's never going to happen. He is just some extremist shooting from the hip.

Yeah, I know, but there's always the possibility of protracted wars in Korea and Iraq (I mean, yeah right, but even an outside chance is scary) and if a draft is set up, I'm screwed.

Even if we were in a war with Korea or Iraq it would not last long enough for there to be a draft. I just don't think that either country provides a formidable threat to the US. Maybe I'm being naive but this isn't 1950 anymore. The US has a far more powerful military than either of these countries.

I agree. It's seems much impossible in our time for it to do so, with such a significant portion of the population against such war and the government a bit more weary with going flat-out against the public. Yeah, it's not everyone against but then there's the people who'll claim that it's just plain unfair, and those who don't want their children going. I honestly just don't see it happening.

Being fourteen and a US-born male at this time is relieving. Being fourteen and a US-born male in the sixties would suck.

It's not possible for all those reasons, and also because there's just no way that some people can cut it in the military, even for 2 years. Especially with the obesity of some of today's teenagers. People today don't even think of running 10 feet, let alone 2 miles everyday.

Maybe it isn't a bad idea, as log as everybody had to do it. You could either do military or some kind of civil service for 1-2 years after high school. Teach people some responsibility and respect and thin out these fatasses.

I'm safe. I've got weak ankles. Plus, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to feign homosexuality. Who's with me!?

Don't buy your plane tickets yet, guys. Its all for show. I think the idea is to make that segment of the American public that wants a war think about the fact that it could be their children who are forced to go. I would also imagine he's using it to highlight the fact that the people most gung-ho to get out there and drop bombs have never seen a day of real combat in thier lives (e.g. Bush, Cheney, Delay).

Exactly. I think that the scare of this threat is a good idea, but it doesn't look like anyone with half a brain believes it.

This is why he is doing it. It is more to make a statement than anything else. It will never actually pass through Congress. And those who do vote for this legislation (if it ever makes it to a vote) will also be trying to make a statement. In today's political climate, it is safer to vote 'yes' for legislation such as this than to vote 'no' on legislation authorizing military action against Iraq and/or North Korea.

I've said this many times: the U.S is turning into the Soviet Union.

Screw America.
