Default Another LOTR question

I haven't read the books either (I will when I have the time) but a person who has was telling me that in The Two Towers, the filmmakers took liberties with some characters, giving them traits the books didn't necessarily provide. Now that I've seen the movie, I am really curious about this.

Did anyone who has read the books think it was the case?

In the book, Faramir resisted the power of the ring and immediately let Frodo and Sam go onward with their journey. In the movie, they just made him into another Boromir.

Also, they started twisting Frodo too soon/too much. Like the scence in which he holds the sword up to Sam's throat.

They did have a 'thing', but it wasn't as played out as it was in the movie.

It is kind of weird that they would ADD a near death experience when it doesn't add any suspense, since the audience knows certain people have to be in the next picture.

Yeah, well, try telling that to all the Viggo addicts who practically cried themselves to death after that scene.

... oh wait.

Let me put it to you this way: Tolkien's sense of romance seemed superficial at the greatest.

That's fine with me. The romantic sideplot is absolutely pointless in the films in my eyes.

Elves never came to assist the men of Rohan, which is my biggest gripe over the movie. The point of the LOTR is supposed to be the rise of Men: Men's time to shine and prove that they're ready to be the dominant race of Middle-Earth. And the inclusion of the elves in the movie kinda killed that a bit.

i read somewhere the reasoning behind that change. If they had kept true to the book, the movie just showing frodo & sam get captured, they chat with faramir, then they go on their way, would have seemed pretty boring and pointless...

Not when it comes to gay romance. The whole Frodo/Sam friendship seems more like a rather well written gay couple than an actual male friendship.

Now that I think about it, you're right. Faramir, in the book, doesn't do a whole helluva lot until the third book, does he?

Thumbs down

Bilbo never wanted the ring and asked that Frodo put it away when they were in Rivendell. also, in the fellowship, it wasn't Arwen who saved frodo at the river... it was Glorfindel. and Elrond was the one who controlled the water thingy. someone should do their research.

The Ents were supposed to decide at their meeting to go kick Saruman's ass. And their knees weren't supposed to bend.

Also, in the book, Theoden is not under the spell of Saruman; he's just manipulated by Wormtongue.

And Eowyn was just supposed to stay behind with the people of Rohan so they wouldn't have a woman bitching at them while they marched off to fight the army of Isengard. She's not supposed to hit on Aragorn either. Slut.
