Default Over a $ billion given for Tsunami relief...

Does that mean Australian's are better than everyone else?
Or more importantly, does that mean I don't have to donate?

yeah thats pretty crazy. its technically like 840 million, US dollars, which is what everyone is keeping score by, but whatever if you count private donations to its almost a billion. it shouldnt be this way, but there is this sense of rivalry or competetion in the giving, that if you give more than some country youre better than them. its productive, but its doesnt make sense, people should just give what they can and relax about it. australia is way in the lead. most dollar amount and most in gdp. germany is giving like 700 million too. norway is 2nd in % of gdp, which makes sense.

im sure some people here will just love this, but france is the second lowest contributer by gdp, next to the UAE. i wonder how many americans defending america against the percentage of gdp argument, saying how irrelevant a scale it is, will now use it against france

The idea of a "giving contest" makes me want to puke.

It's stupid. You shouldn't make a game out of these things. It's reality..

i haven't donated. i have a feeling some of those "charities" are just pocketing the relief money.

You and sleeper both make good points. I think in the end if ego drives the dollars up for the relief then that's ok! Its helping isn't it?

i dont see how it couldnt have happened. its human nature, this shit will always happen, and its happened all through the past as well. who can out-grieve, out-mourn, out-give, out-cry over something. im sure there were more than a few people faking the tears on 9/11 for mourning-cred, or people wearing those ribbons deriding those without, and people wearing two deriding those with one. but for a change, this comes to something a good end so im not going to complain too much about it

Thumbs up

I organized a donation drive in my office. It wasn't huge, but I raised almost $1200. I wish everyone would stop politicizing the donations, though.

Well yes, but the donation thing has nothing to do with that.

the politics of it are undeniable, but i do think some nations are giving on some level out of the goodness of their heart. few, but some. maybe.

and i was just poking fun at the capitalist creed you always dole out in every thread, dont take offense or anything

Yeah, it all started when the Undersecretary of the UN called the US stingy, I think. Since then, it's turned into a big, stupid race.

Bill Gates probably is, but I don't think he'd announce if he donated alot. The President mentioned in one of his recent speeches that he would be calling on a certain few "private citizens" to make generous donations. I'm sure he meant Bill.
