How thoroughly quaint.

Anyway, the North American system is generally as follows:

A = 90-100 = 4 quality points
B = 80-89 = 3 quality points
C = 70-79 = 2 quality points
D = 60-69 = 1 quality point
and anything below a 60 is an F and gets you zero quality points.

To figure your GPA, you divide the number of quality points you've earned into the number of classes you've taken. So three A's, a B and a C is 4+4+4+3+2=17 divided by five classes is 3.4

Some schools have a system of pluses and minuses; at my school (UNC), an A is (generally; individual professors can and pretty much always do come up with their own scales) a 93-100 and counts for 4 points, an A- is 90-92 and counts for 3.7 points, a B+ is something like 87-89 and counts for 3.3 ... and it goes on like that down the scale.

In high schools, they almost always don't do that plus-minus shit, but you can get extra credit for taking honors courses or AP/IB courses (college-level courses).

That was probably way too much information. Sorry. :-/

3.73 this semester.

i'm glad we don't have the plus and minus system. getting rewarded for a B+ is cool, but i don't like the looks of that A-

Pretty much every assignment you get in a course is graded. Each assignment is given a different weight and then those scores are averaged to make your final grade for a class. For instance, let's say you have a class in which tests are 80% and quizzes 20%; you take two tests and make a 90 and a 80 and two quizzes and make a 90 and a 100. Your test average is an 85; your quiz average is a 95. Your grade is (85 x .8) + (95 x .2) = 87; that's a B and you get 3 quality points for that class. Standardized tests are generally graded completely differently. The SAT is on a scale of 400-1600 with 1000 being average; state test scores generally are given as percentiles.

And GPAs don't carry from high school to college, but they are cumulative in each institution (i.e. all four years of high school make up your final GPA in high school and all four years of college make up your final GPA in college). High school GPAs are generally compared to everybody else in your class, thus giving you a class rank, which usually is the main statistic that colleges look at when considering GPA during the admissions process.
