Default argue with this:

as many know, politics is/are not my bag.
a firm republican was telling me this. refute this, so i'll get both sides clear and simple:
sadaam has been playing this game with the US concerning weapons inspection for 10 years. finally Bush is taking a stand and saying "i dont care what you say, all the excuses you've been making for years and years, we're going in."

what, if anything, is wrong with what he's doing and what else is it about Bush/republican authority do many people on this board disagree with?

interventionism is a bad policy, especially in the case of Iraq which really has no weapons that can harm the United States, and in the first place why does Iraq have no right to have weapons while America does? America has massacred plenty of people. why are there sanctions on selling food and medical supplies to Iraq? sure, a lot of it will be absorbed unfairly by those in power (gee, that doesn't happen in America, everybody gets the food they need, right!) but there has to be a reason thousands more children and poor are dying now than before the sanctions were enacted. also, an unnecessary, unprovoked attack like this one isn't going to make us any more friends, or make us less of a terrorist target. and that's not even mentioning how we put Saddam in power in the first place for our own immoral purposes, and gave him weapons and millions of dollars (right? i'm pretty sure we gave them tons of money too, i know we gave them shitloads of weapons). so why is Bush making war? he needs something to distract the public from the economy, for one. and Iraq is an easy target. then there's the oil. etc.

got it?

It's ALL bullshit. To go into all the reasons why both sides are wrong in this would take a long time, and if you're lucky you might get a 10-page thread out of it!

There are many issues involved here, such as the concept of weapon ownership (why should certain countries be allowed nukes, especially when they're backing away from promised disarmament?) and supply, the reasons for attacking Iraq, what's going to happen to the country and the people afterward, the way Bush is completely pushing for war even in the face of Iraq's compliance... I can't even focus on one thing, it's such a huge issue. Look at it this way - the US was fine with Saddam during the Iran-Iraq war, even going so far as to provide him with some nice chemical weapons. Suddenly now he has to go. There was a huge chance for him to be overthrown at the end of the Gulf War, an uprising was incited and Baghdad lost control of most of the country. And right at that crucial moment, the US decided to lift the ban on Iraqi aircraft taking off - what followed was a massacre. Basically, dictatorships are easier to deal with than socialist and democratic governments. I'm personally not seeing good times ahead for the Iraqi people.

Saddam has been screwing around, because he's stayed in power. The country has been crippled in terms of infrastructure and stability, their economy is a wreck, healthcare is below minimal, and much of this can be attributed to the sanctions imposed. There was an Oil for Food program established to allow some help to get through, but the Iraqi government aren't exactly distributing it among the people.

In some ways, Iraq has been screwing around - but I can see their side of it. Why should they have to give in to a foreign power, surrender their rights and allow forces to move in? They've been bombed almost daily for the past 10 years... as far as they're concerned they're at war with the US and UK, and they have every right to protect themselves. Ironically, Bush is still deciding it's time to 'go in' even as Iraq surrenders many rights to allow inspectors in. I certainly wasn't expecting them to allow teams to randomly access sites everywhere, even usually secure locations such as palaces. That is a major concession, and it seems that Bush is trying to rush in before anyone notices what's happening.

Dear Problem Page: Angels Stole My Porno Medallion.

I won my porno medallion at the Erotic Movie Championship in Copenhagen, circa my last major depression. The medallion was for endurance; I successfully watched twenty consecutive hours of hardcore love pornography, masturbating to climax at least once an hour, which was sufficient to win the contest. The man who finished second fell asleep in my lap at the nineteen-hour mark, making my final hour doubly difficult.

My porno medallion was presented to me by Edgar Shafley, an American breast entrepreneur and unshaven marksman. He shook my hand and told me I was a ‘very, very important person in the world of jerk-stamina’. He offered to kiss my cheek, but I simply laughed and bit him at the prospect.

In the months that followed, I often sat at home and doted on the medal – sometimes vigourously – and I seemed to cherish it more when the weather was glum (read into that what you will). The medallion was seldom out of the range of my eyes and sometimes I would make it cups of tea – obviously drinking them myself. If the medallion was larger and shaped like a house, I would have lived in it (even without central heating!), such was my love for the thing.

Around July, I started summoning angelic beings with almost unhealthy regularity. They’d dance around my room and tell me boring stories. I became particularly close to two of them: Arlene, an ancient seraph who once saw Jesus beat a camel to death to prove a point; and Aprilface, a sprightly young angel with no Christ-related anecdotes to speak of, but with a slightly unnerving tendency to wake me in the middle of the night by attacking me with hot water.

Summer raged on – I built politically motivated sandcastles on the beach and went on many skipping expeditions with my friends – and Arlene and Aprilface would visit me almost every night. My porno medallion was still very dear to me, and I had soon built a special case for it next to my sleeping-bed. The two angels would often admire the medallion and say things like, ‘That’s a nice medallion’.

One night, near the end of August, Aprilface came to me alone, looking very pensive. She was wearing a sickeningly melancholy cap, and only scolded me with about a desert spoon’s worth of boiling water – only a tenth of her usual quota. I asked her why she cried, for she did.

“Arlene was captured by space-zombies while visiting the Sirius star system!” She cried. “The only thing that will get her back is your porno medallion.” It sounded very far-fetched, and she explained that she was unable to tell me why my medallion was the key to Arlene’s release. . . I’d just have to trust her.

I didn’t believe her for a second, but she had nice tits, so I relented. She told me she would get the medallion back to me by the end of the year. But she hasn’t. I’m so confused. Should I carry on trying to summon Aprilface in the (probably vain) hope that she will appear to me again, or should I just accept that I am never going to gaze upon my medallion again and simply move on with my life? I think the fact that I feel like I was used is what is making it all so tough to deal with. Please help me.

is it just a big deal because america is one (if not THE) strongest country?

I hope this is a joke.

Questions : Why did Iraq import equipment like the centrifugator (which is only used to make a sort of uranium that is used in nuclear weapons)?
Is intervention always a bad policy? So saddam should have been able to take over kuwait?
Is it better that an insane dictator who several times has used chemical weapons against his own population (like attacking non military targets such as villages and such) owns weapons of massdestruction than not because another country has them?!?!?

(sorry about ze inglish, i'm french.)

Centrifuges are only used to separate uranium isotopes? You can make fucking cheese with them.

I'm not really sure about this but I'm thinking right now that perhaps a "policeman of the world" is necessary as in we have police in individual towns and cities to make sure law and order are seen through. Maybe there should be a nation or group of nations to see that there is law and order in the world and that these patrolling nations require arms of some sort. I know the U.S. is already such a nation (this is why it claims to need weapons while Iraq should not) and that its doing a bad job at it, but the concept of a police nation shouldn't be immediately dismissed. Not like its any country's divine right to have that power, but you have to have rules. I'm just trying to get it in an ethical/philisophical slant rather than a political one.

But you need to make sure that the power doing the policing is actually doing so in a just and fair way - which is why organizations such as the UN are preferable. I know the UN isn't exactly perfect, but I'd rather see a group of states making decisions democratically than a single state saying 'we know what we're doing, back off' and trusting them to do the right thing. 'Law and Order' is also a relative term

Bush will financially destroy America, and kill many of its people. We're wallowing in a BIG recession, people. Besides, Saddam has no weapons that can reach the US from Iraq.
