Haha, damn listen to you all. This is a fucking Smashing Pumpkins message board. Why would a Mod need any reason to close a thread? There's nothing saying a Mod needs to be reasonable at all! There was no Bill of Rights that you looked over as you signed up for this thing. It seems to me that if this is the worst thing the Tyrannical Mods have done than you better feel quite lucky your liberties weren't further denied by being sent to the e-guillotine or drafted a knight and sent on an e-crusade!

hi everyone. have you ever thought that possibly the whole problem with the moderation system is that it exists in the first place? believe it or not, but the healthiest of message boards are the ones that have very little admin input. as the board is left to fend for itself, the users recognize the need to moderate themselves. since regular users do not have the permissions required for traditional moderation, they instead moderate the board socially with condemnation and ridicule.
this accomplishes many things. the first of which is that it introduces a sense of ownership into the userbase. this active maintenance of the board enhances the pride that each user has, and encourages the growth of content, whilst discouraging practices that are harmful to the board. the second thing it does is to ensure that no thread gets closed. closing threads is probably one of the most pointless things a moderator could do on a message board. often another thread gets started up discussing the same topic requiring another closing of that thread and so on. closing of threads also causes large amounts of discontent within the community. the controversy and flame war that erupts afterwards is commonly more damaging to the board than the closed thread was in the first place. thirdly, people don't like to be made fun of nor looked down upon. these methods of control are much more effective than a moderator saying "don't do that." this thread demonstrates quite clearly how moderators often only have power due to their permissions. they get little respect otherwise. resulting from this is a tendency for those harming the board to shrug off any stern talkings-to from moderators. on the other side of things, having the entire board tell a disruptive poster to stfu is a much more powerful tool. so, for all of you moderators out there, stop doing what you're doing. tag nsfw threads and fix the occasional broken link. if you're not doing that, then stay the fuck out. sure, the board will be really messy for a bit, but after the users start taking things into their own hands, you'll find the board will have a renaissance. |
