Police shoot gunman, free hostage
'It was like something out of a movie'

CURTIS RUSH
STAFF REPORTERS

A gunman has been shot dead by a police sniper and his hostage freed after a rush-hour standoff outside of Union Station on Front St. this morning.
After a tense confrontation between the suspect and dozens of heavily armed officers, a member of the Emergency Task Force made the decision to shoot the suspect. The gunman was felled by a fatal shot to the head at 8:50 a.m. The female hostage was unharmed.

The same gunman is suspected of shooting a woman in the food court of the nearby TD Centre only minutes before the hostage taking.

The first shooting took place around 8:10 a.m. in the busy concourse of the downtown skyscraper at 100 Wellington St. West.

Eli Nov, who owns a restaurant in the food court, says he recognized the sound of gunshots immediately.

Nov, a former Israeli soldier, heard "two pops" and quickly hustled his family and employees into the freezer of his countertop eatery, Pumpernickel Catering.

Inside the freezer, Nov's wife phoned 911 and reported a shooting.

After a few minutes, Nov emerged alone and saw a woman lying on the ground bleeding from the head.

"She didn't say she was shot. She just asked for a pillow," Nov said. "It was just a scratch, but it was gushing blood."

Emergency personnel rushed the woman to hospital. She was conscious on arrival and Community Safety Minister Monte Kwinter later said she was "injured, but slightly."

Shortly thereafter, a Toronto police officer working paid duty near the Royal York Hotel heard the details of the attack over his radio and spotted a suspect walking nearby.

He confronted the suspect and tried to talk to him, but the man grabbed a hostage before police could apprehend him.

The ETF arrived soon after. They tried to negotiate with the man for nearly an hour. He continued to point the gun at the woman and police as they talked.

"This was an extremely dangerous situation in a very public place," police Chief Julian Fantino said later. "You have to take first and foremost into account the safety of the public"

Fantino said the ETF officer made a decision to shoot the man fearing for the safety of the woman, police and passersby.

The hostage, a young woman in her early 20s, was uninjured.

Police covered the hostage taker's body with a tarp. It was removed nearly three hours later.

Hundreds of stunned onlookers watched the scene play out on one of the city's busiest streets.

"It was an unbelievable thing to see. It was like something out of a movie," bank employee Oroosh Sheikh said.

Front St. between Bay and York Sts. will be closed for most of the afternoon as the investigation continues. Police are advising motorists to avoid the area.

GO trains and buses are operating normally. Union Station remains open, but travellers must enter through the lower concourse or Bay St. entrances.

Cool.

Have any of you guys ever wondered if the CN tower were to fall over from the base, how far into the downtown it would reach and how many buildings it would crush? Or is that just like me? :erm

Toronto police kill hostage taker

TORONTO, Canada (Reuters) -- Toronto police shot and killed a man who was holding a woman hostage in the city's business core Wednesday, ending a standoff that brought morning rush-hour traffic to a gridlocked standstill.

Toronto police chief Julian Fantino said the half-hour incident was related to an earlier shooting inside a downtown building that left a woman in hospital with head injuries.

Police approached the suspect after the first shooting, but the man ran, and took a woman hostage outside Union Station, the key commuter transit hub to Canada's largest city.

Efforts to negotiate with the armed man did not work and Fantino said police had no choice but to shoot after the man brandished a gun at the woman and police several times.

"One of our officers, fearing for the situation to escalate before the safety of the woman and police officers and other citizens at the scene, responded as he is trained to do," he said.

"He fired in the direction of the suspect and the suspect was struck and appears to be mortally wounded."

The woman hostage was not injured and was escorted from the scene as her hostage taker lay on the sidewalk in a pool of blood, and covered in a sheet. He had apparently been shot in the head.

Gun violence is rare in Toronto, as in the rest of Canada, which has much tougher gun control laws than those in the United States.

when i was a kid and first moved to toronto i had this irrational fear that it would fall and crush my house. i remember having nightmares about it for years, until someone thought to explain to my 6-year old self that there was about a nil chance of a 500m tower falling over and crushing a house that was 30km away
